Domenici to Speak at Hidalgo County Banquet

U.S. Senator Pete Domenici will address a Dutch treat dinner at El Charro Cafe in Lordsburg. Chamber official Glenn Dorsett says the community is invited. Domenici has not visited Hidalgo County since 1972 but DC aides expect a visit to Hidalgo County again.

New Agency To Check Welfare Recipients

Special agent Peter Marvin heads a new state agency in Las Cruces that investigates welfare and food stamp fraud in New Mexico’s six southern counties. The seven member force, drawn from former police, acts on reports from local case workers and forwards findings to the District Attorney for possible prosecution.

Thieves Strike Hit Lordsburg blotter with multiple thefts

Thieves struck Lordsburg as police handled several calls this week. Bishop Lumber Company reported six high calibre rifles stolen through a north side window. Sarge's Shell recovery noted but air wrench previously missing. now found. Vandalism appeared at an unoccupied 403 W Second Street residence and a window at C&E Auto Supply was broken.

County Bus Drivers Set for New Mexico Institute

Hidalgo County bus drivers join peers from across the state in Silver City for the New Mexico Pupil Transportation Institute from August 4 to 8. About half of New Mexico’s 1800 school bus drivers are expected to attend the five day program focusing on safety education and maintenance.

Lordsburg Fails To File HRC Affirma tive Action Plan

Lordsburg expects scrutiny as Ed Navrot of the New Mexico Human Rights Commission notes the city has not filed an required affirmative action plan. A district court ruling previously found the city guilty on three discrimination charges after 14 were tossed out, with damages paid and workers reinstated.
