Weather pattern repeats with heat and clouds

The forecast mirrors recent days with clear mornings, hot afternoons, and cloudy evenings. Widely scattered thundershowers are expected statewide but no significant rainfall is forecast for the local area.

Lordsburg Council Approves Tentative Budget For 78-79

Lordsburg city council, in special session, approved the 1978-79 tentative budget after E M Fisher Jr outlined line item corrections tied to year-end audits. The panel also readied three resolutions for state finance board corrections and moved to open the municipal judge’s office 9 am to 5 pm on weekdays, with 90 day take effect. The administration seeks time by accepting interest-only on a $22,000 January 1979 payment and added about $18,000 for road repair. A new Publicity Manager position and four two ton pickups plus a ½ ton pickup were approved, with sewer and water repairs and six fire hydrants discussed for the south end.

Cotton Extravaganza Winners Named

Nineteen seamstresses competed for district and state advancement at the Cotton Extravaganza on July 13. Winners include Michelle Coogan modeling June Payne made outfit in Tiny Tot. Mary Merrel won Sugar Plum with a shirt modeled by her son Bart. Stella Wood won Casual Time with her outfit. Two men face aggravated battery charges from a July 13 stabbing at Lordsburg Ball Park. Raymond Valdez treated at Hillcrest Memorial Hospital. Armando Sierra Sapien and Raymond Ortega held on $5000 bonds. The State Fire Marshal trains Cotton City firefighters with two sessions remaining on July 24 and 31 led by Don Naylor.

Obscene Books Mags Moved Behind Counters In Hidalgo Stores

Local merchants in Hidalgo County removed nude type magazines and books from public view placing them behind counters. The move follows no active anti obscenity ordinance and appears driven by customer taste rather than pressure from groups or government. Debra and Lori Ashley of Lordsburg and Las Cruces surrendered on warrants related to burglary, pleaded guilty to petty larceny, and received 12 months probation.

Local Youth Injured on Vacation Near Jeffersonville

Nick Salinas son of Rev and Mrs Ali Salinas of Lordsburg was hurt while riding a mini bike at a church camp near Jeffersonville Indiana. He was taken to Jeffersonville Hospital where doctors found a spinal cord injury and say he is improving though still in traction. He may not need surgery and plans call for air transport to El Paso when movement is possible.

Local Fire Rates Drop as Lordsburg Becomes Class 7

The Insurance Rate Making Office of New Mexico in Albuquerque advised area insurers that Lordsburg Public Protection Class has changed from Class 8 to Class 7 effective July 14 1978. The update affects fire insurance for dwellings homeowners and commercial property with review cited by J W Griffith Administration Supervisor.

Cement Shortage Eases Some What With Mexico Export Renewals

U S Senator Harrison Schmitt announced New Mexico will see partial relief from the cement shortage as Mexico renews export licenses for two border plants, one serving New Mexico. The Commerce Department pressed the renewal amid Mexico’s prior suspension to meet rising domestic demand.
