The American Cancer Society volunteers plan a pot-luck supper at Lordsburg Civic Center on July 21 at 7 p.m. Residents of Lordsburg Animas Playas and Rodeo are urged to attend and bring their own utensils.
Hidalgo County Commissioners appointed Donald Humphrey, administrator of Sunshine Haven Nursing Home, as Consulting Administrator of Hidalgo General Hospital. The hospital, closed since early June, faces reopening plans and a 90 to 120 day study. Humphrey will be paid 500 dollars monthly plus expenses and will report monthly, with a goal to establish an operating program, staff, and budget before revisiting state licensing.
Lordsburg City Council approved a $750 monthly salary for municipal Judge Jesus Estrada and required regular hours and availability. Mayor Alan A. Koff cited citizen complaints and said the rule would ease problems, noting current hours from 5 to 6 p.m. were inadequate. Estrada summarized any disagreements, with Police Chief Bob Hall invited to discuss court issues.
School officials wrapped up the final public meeting on a 1.8 million bond proposal to fund buildings and equipment. The administration building drew criticism as proponents argued for room sizes and uses while opponents urged smaller scope and playground funding was added to the classroom budget.
Felony warrants were issued in magistrate court in Lordsburg on Wednesday afternoon July 12 for the arrest of Debbie Ashley 20 and Lori Ashley 18 both of Lordsburg for burglary of a residence. The Harris residence was entered and a number of plants and other items were taken. Police seek the sisters in Las Cruces.
A two car crash at the I-10 and Main underpass Sunday night left Mrs. Norma Badders of Lordsburg and Mrs. Nellie Menares of Duncan with head injuries and transported to Hillcrest Memorial Hospital in Silver City. The incident, which saw one vehicle roll twice, was investigated by Lordsburg police and Hidalgo County deputies. An ambulance rushed both women to care, with Menares also suffering arm abrasions.
About 45 locals attended the Animas Chapter of WIFE at the community center for a forum with national WIFE president Betty Majors and Republican gubernatorial candidate Joe Skeen. Majors urged farmers to reject second class status, pressed for price support, and urged voter scrutiny of legislators. Skeen, an agri-involved candidate, warned profit in farming remains scarce unless selling out, noted foreign investors, and addressed Southwest water issues in a Q and A session.
