Capital area phone bill hikes loom after SCC nod

State regulatory action grants General Telephone and Mountain States raises in interstate and local rates. One party business charges rise across communities from Fort Sumner to Taos and Clovis as the SCC approves an 8 percent rate of return and finalizes cost adjustments.

Ben Dugan Services Held

Funeral services for Ben Goor man Dugan who died July 3 1969 in Vietnam from ship collision injuries were held in Heather Chapel on July 17. Survivors include his parents three sisters two grandmothers and numerous aunts and uncles. Pallbearers were from the Navy Department at White Sands and the firing squad from Ft. Bliss. Burial was at Mountain View Cemetery.

Selective Service Plans New Mexico Youth Advisory Committee

The 14 member New Mexico Youth Advisory Committee will include 18 to 25 year olds to advise on how the draft could be improved. Members include four senior college students, one junior college student, five high school students, one trade school student, two youths employed in industry and one in agriculture.

Purge Board Removes 590 Names From Voting Records

The Hidalgo County Purge Board purged about 550 to 590 names from the voting rolls under the new state election code. County Clerk Emma J. Scofield says notices went out before July 15 with Sept 15, 1969 as the purge effective date after the 60 day response window. Names of deceased or felons or those who did not vote in November 1968 were removed. others must update addresses or names at the county clerk’s office. Board members Burke Stiles, Victor Reay, and James McBride led the purge.

Jaycees Offer Bicycle Giveaway at August 16 Drawing

The Jaycees announced a bicycle raffle at their last meeting funded by 50e donations to help pay for a World War II memorial eagle at Hidalgo County Courthouse. Tickets are available and the bicycle can be viewed at Gamble’s ahead of the August 16 drawing at First National Bank lobby.

Border Paisanos Visit Lordsburg for Chamber Meet

The Border Paisanos, a goodwill group from the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, will stop in Lordsburg Friday July 18 from 5 15 to 6 p m for cocktails at La Fiesta Club. The 30 members invite businessmen and others to attend.

Tennis Classes Updated Morning Sessions and New Evening Weights

Tennis classes shift to morning sessions Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 to 10 a.m. replacing Tuesdays Wednesdays and Saturdays. Evening workouts run 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A nightly weights program for all ages is now available 6 to 9 p.m. at the football stadium.

New Phone Rates Now In Effect In Lordsburg

Mountain State Telephone wins a July 15 rate increase after a long delay, with new charges for residential and business lines and altered long distance pricing. Long distance, station to station and holiday reductions are noted, and officials say the move improves earnings to fund service expansion.

Local UNM graduates include two area students

Maria Gandara and Johnny Russell Harper were among about 1600 graduates at UNM's 77th commencement on June 7. Gandara earned a bachelor of science in elementary education, Harper a bachelor of science in biology, and David A. Lehman received a bachelor of business administration in marketing.

Lordsburg School Board Seeks Bond Plan After Failure

The Lordsburg board of education, led by Superintendent Carl McMillan, names Kern Smith of Carlsbad to design plans and sites for a new elementary school. A $725,000 bond failed last February, trigger­ing state requirements and temporary portable classrooms at Wilson School. The board also targets high school parking upgrades, space dividers for a multipurpose study hall, gym repairs at Central School, and lighting improvements with limited funds. Bids for paint and materials go to Ritter Lambert, H Bishop, and Lopez to paint lunchroom and other areas.

Wells Named Library Board President

James T. Wells of Lordsburg was elected President of the Lordsburg Hidalgo Library board at the annual directors meeting held Monday July 14. Mrs Bethel Fuller resigned after serving since 1928 and as president for several years. the board noted her 41 years of service and library growth from a small club offshoot to a county library with over 10 000 volumes and an annual circulation of 17 000.
