Postage meter mystery swirls around Gov Cargo affair

A memo and a stamped letter linked to Gov Cargo sparked questions about the use of the governors office postage meter. Ernest E. Martinez of Mora claimed Appreciation Day support for Cargo and noted public events at Mora with barbecues and entertainers. Officials say the meter was used on envelope tops and taxpayer funds paid postage, while other letters praising Cargo appeared tied to state offices.

OEO Grants Aid for Six New Mexico Counties

The Office of Economic Opportunity approves a $100,000 grant to buy food and medical supplies for Hidalgo and five other New Mexico counties lacking action agencies. Governor Cargo notes the plan, prepared with Health and Social Services, will provide monthly food stamps to about 1,000 families and annual medical services to around 2,000 people.

Local Navy Man Killed In Vietnam

Mr and Mrs Perry Dugan have been notified their son Ben was killed in Vietnam last week in an accident involving a collision between two Navy patrol boats. Further details are not known at this time.

Grazing Privileges Transfer Filed by Great Lakes Inc

Great Lakes Land and Cattle Inc filed to transfer Federal grazing privileges with the Bureau of Land Management in Las Cruces New Mexico. The action follows the sale of ranch properties once owned by Mr and Mrs Doak Heard and covers fifteen thousand twenty six acres. Roy Stovall, Area Manager, handles the transfer.

Ruby Jeanes Elected Auxiliary President in Deming

Mrs. Ruby Jeanes of Deming was elected president of Robert Swan Unit No. 30 of the American Legion Auxiliary at the July 7 meeting in the legion hall. Other officers for 1969 70 include Mrs. W F Winters vice president Mrs. John Robertson historian Mrs W W Scott chaplain Mrs Tom Moody sergeant at arms Mrs Cassie Martinez treasurer and Mrs. Harry Chase secretary.

Named to Dean's Honor Roll at Abilene Christian College

Scotty Jones of Lordsburg has been named to the Dean's Honor Roll for the spring semester at Abilene Christian College. A sophomore psychology major, Jones is among 351 students listed. To qualify, students must take at least 12 hours and maintain a 3.5 GPA.

Little League results recap with multiple games

Wednesday VFW defeated First National Bank 13 to 1 as Raffles Guardiola earned the win over Many Meza. Guardiola also homered. FNB scored 1 run on 1 hit with 4 errors. Saucedos beat LULACs 4 to 1 with David Marquez as winner and David Garcia tagged with the loss. Victor Diaz homered for Saucedos. All-Star teams played Duncan All-Stars on July 4 with Jaime Alvarez winning pitcher. Rufles Guardiola homered and the trio of Marquez Garcia also pitched. All-Stars totaled 19 runs on 14 hits with 2 errors. Other games noted include Prices defeating FNB 11-4, Tony Uresti homering and doubling. July 9 San Simon did not show. Saucedo's 3, VFW 2 with Ed Romo winning.

Sheriff Office Adds 24 Hour Radio Dispatch Support

The 1969-70 county budget funds around the clock radio dispatchers for the sheriff's office and a new car for the deputy sheriff. Sheriff Leroy McCarty notes the deputy previously used a personal car with mileage reimbursements. Dispatchers are Rosa Lina Salinas Harvey Martin and Henry Grady Keeter with Ali Salinas as relief.

New Mexico Motorists Tax Support Rises 59 Percent

The Automobile Manufacturers Association reports New Mexico highway user revenues climbed from 33 million in 1958 to 53 million last year. Motor fuel receipts rose from 23 million to 37 million over the decade, while about 37 million goes to federal automotive taxes. Special motor user taxes now total 23.9 percent of state taxes.

Softball All-Stars Triumph In Fourth Of July Game

The Softball All-Stars defeated the has-been stars 20 to 7 in a July 4 matchup. Key players included Ruben Bassa with a homer and two RBIs, Carl Bejarano and Sal Ortega homering, Victor Nativi Zach doubling and two singles, and Danny Saucedo adding two hits. The has-beens were led by Ching Corrales with a homer and a single.

New Eagle for Hidalgo County World War II Monument

An eagle sculpture for the Hidalgo County World War II memorial is on view in the First National Bank of Lordsburg lobby. Betty Lazar arranged for sculptor LS Edwards of Lubbock Texas to create the piece at a cost of 500 dollars funded by local donations.
