TV Translator Goes On Air For Hidalgo County Area
A new TV translator serving Cotton City Animas and the Animas Valley began full time service Sunday July 2. Hidalgo County funded the project after months of installation challenges including terrain and power. Allan Kerr Hidalgo County manager says the transmitter atop a Road Forks area mountain improves reception for residents.

Large Crowds Attend Local 4th Celebrations
Crowds estimated upwards of 3,000 attended Lordsburg 4th of July events organized by the Optimist and Octagon Clubs. Activities spanned swimming contests, tennis, skateboarding, field and track events, horse and buggy rides, and a youth-filled day at North Park. A dusk all-star game preceded a one hour fireworks show, with a brush fire started by leftover air burst quickly extinguished by two fire trucks.

Old Traditions Broken Kept Alive In Playas
Fourth of July at Playas featured a sunny day with a parade lead by Tammy Ellis and Rebecca Taylor as Little Miss Firecracker and Little Miss Sparkler. Carley Riggs won the inaugural Dune Buggy Race in 56.6 seconds while 700 hamburgers were served and children’s games, races, and events filled the day.

Keys Turned Over As Hidalgo General Hospital Closes
Hidalgo General Hospital Board resigned effective June 30 after a county order. Books and keys were handed to Hidalgo County Manager Allan Kerr and Clerk Pat Paulos. The hospital has been closed since June 5 due to financial trouble and doctor shortages. Emergency calls are now handled by county services. a reopening is hoped for by fall but depends on staff and certification. Dr. Jacinto Lopez closed the attached clinic office and plans a month’s vacation, awaiting county decision.
