Swimming lessons begin at Lordsburg Municipal Pool on July 15 at 10:00 a.m. Classes run for two weeks from Tuesday through Saturday. The fee is $8. Instructor is Fred La Marca, Water Safety Instructor. Registration available each afternoon except Monday. pool phone 542-3774.
Lordsburg city lawmakers approve a half percent local sales tax hike to 4.5 percent, effective January 1, 1981, with flexible dates and allocation plans for police, industrial development, incidentals, and youth programs. Voters may trigger an election within 90 days by petition.
Grant County authorities continue to investigate the death of Chevyl Hill 34 whose body was found partially buried in Gold Gulch near Lordsburg on April 20. Hill had lived in Silver City and was reported missing February 9 from a Silver City residence. Identified April 29, the case is led by the Grant County Sheriff with help from Silver City Police and Hidalgo County Sheriff Office.
The plaintiff in a $500000 civil suit against Lordsburg seeks an out of court settlement for $25000, per Lordsburg City Council discussion. Sherry Bales claims wrongful termination after testifying in a bribery case involving two city officers, with due process denied. Defendants include the city, council, and John Schimmel who was terminated. Trial date not set. mayoral defendant dropped. Also notes Jupiter occultation by the moon next Tuesday evening in Hidalgo County.
Phelps Dodge Corp. announced a Sept. 1 restructuring led by retiring president Warren Fenzi. George Munroe will become president again while Edward Michaelsen, Richard Moolick, and William Seidman become vice chairmen, each overseeing key business sectors and operations. Kinneberg joins as director.
