Monday night action featured Jody Castre and Ramirez Banner Mine for Wimp's Shell in a tight 10 9 defeat as Mondey Powell upset CPS with a 14 9 score line in a high scoring game at the park.
Mr Culberson travels to New York for a national club convention. Mrs Culberson and son Jimmie fly from El Paso, visit Yankees vs Red Sox game, take a boat tour, and tour local sights while the convention runs.
B Paul Fierro is named buyer at Up-To-Date Goods Co replacing Mrs Olla Williams who resigned. June Williams left earlier in the year and Cucua Carmona remains a saleslady with five years at the firm. Mary continues as office assistant while Fierro assumes duties and aims to please all customers.
Swan Auxiliary Unit of the American Legion held an evening meeting presided by Mrs. Jesus, due to the president's absence. The group discussed department matters and planned the installation of officers. Dues for the new term were paid by several members.
Local report notes Ralph Sheldrick visiting from Silver City on Sunday, with observers in BER city welcoming the guest and noting casual engagements during the visit.
Two service members from Fort Bliss sustained serious injuries in a 1 am crash on Highway 70 near the U S 70 and State 180 junction. LeRoy Ewing, 20, suffered a skull fracture. Keith Patchell, 21, had fractures in multiple limbs. They were flown to El Paso after initial care in Hidalgo County Hospital. Ortega of Lordsburg was cited for failure to yield and fined $10 plus costs.
Harold E. Scofield is named commander of Robert Swan Post No. 30 The American Legion Lordsburg succeeding Jesus Estrada who led the post two years. New officers include Fausto Noce Clements Baisa Felix Jimenez Jose A Lopez Robert Williams Lalo Sanchez and Elmer Jeanes appointed adjutant. Committee chairs set with Noce Saucedo Williams Bishop Martinez Dunagan Jeanes Baisa Estrada and Ramirez.
The Sunshine Girls postponed their regular meeting from July 17 to July 24. Initiation ceremony for honorary members will occur then. They thank Joe Smith of T&M Dairy for dairy products for the 4th of July picnic and L. E. Gay for a phono record prize. Plans include a father daughter box supper, swimming party, progress dinner, slumber party and two benefit bridges in August. They discuss a November bazaar.
First Baptist Church opens a revival this Friday at 7 30 with Rev Philip McGahey preaching. Regular services follow including Saturday and weekday evenings at 7 30 and 6 30 a m morning services. Nursery provided during Sunday services and all evenings through July 2.
Public Health officials and city leaders met at City Hall to map a long term plan to eradicate grasshoppers crickets and beetles in Lordsburg. The group considered soil sterilization vandalism of alleys and the need for an entomologist with spraying expertise to coordinate efforts and test programs with state health department support.
The Fourth District meeting in Bayard on June 28 named James Kinkema of Lordsburg to the National Committee of Civil Defense. Lordsburg members Franklin Hood and Henry Brown received roles as Aide de Camp and Surgeon of District 4. George F. Bridgford and the Lordsburg Post 3099 earned honorary community service awards. Rudolf F. Otero and C. R. Hogebom were noted in department leadership, with Tomas P. Foy as Junior Vice Commander. The next district meeting is set for July 19 in Deming.
Lordsburg Patrol Breaking Even hosts Safford Sunday at Short Field for a 4 pm game. The team, about .500 with tight losses, beat Hurley 2 to 1 on July 4 and lost 7 to 5 to Silver City C.Y.O. last Saturday in Silver City.
The Rev. and Mrs. Arthur Shaw spent several days in Alpine this week.
Sparks from welding repairs on a windmill started a grass fire east of the Prisoner of War Camp road and south of the highway. Lordsburg firemen fought the blaze Thursday afternoon using water from the truck tank. The fire grew after the water ran out, burning about 60 acres to the south and east of the initial area.
