Forecasters warn temperatures will stay hot in Hidalgo County with highs near 100 degrees on several days. Isolated thundershowers may provide brief relief, but heat remains dominant in the coming weeks.
A Columbia University team led by Dr. Frank Findlow surveys Hidalgo County to study internal structures of larger Indian settlements. They select random townships, lay 20 meter transects, collect artifacts within three minute squares, and note site and transect numbers for later assembly. Pieces found are mostly small pottery and stone fragments as many large sites have been destroyed.
Lordsburg appoints John Schimmel as public relations director after a 3-3 council vote. Mayor Ted White breaks the tie in favor. Schimmel resigns soon after, council accepts. City reports a $75,000 state grant with a July 11 spending deadline and a plan for sewage improvements.
David Daniel Warren Jr 56 longtime Grant Hidalgo County resident died July 3 in Alpine Masonic services were held July 6 at Heather Chapel and graveside with Lordsburg Masonic Lodge and Grand Secretary Ronald Brinkman officiating Warren a WWII veteran and NM State University graduate served 18 years in Lordsburg Public Schools as science teacher guidance counselor and junior high principal He was active in Knights of Pythias Elks Old Timers and Lordsburg Golf Club and held local government service on the city council He is survived by his wife Ruby a daughter Patricia Edwards a son David Warren III and two granddaughters Penny Adriene and Mary Tamara Edwards.
Hidalgo County Grand Jury convened at 9 a.m. on Wednesday July 6 and will expire July 11. District Court Judge Norman Hodges empaneled the panel after petitions circulated locally. Subpoenas have been served with proceedings kept secret until completion. contact 542-3411 for more information.
Lordsburg imposes an additional one cent sales tax effective July 1 after city council approval amid previous opposition. The new rate reaches four and a quarter percent with the extra funds staying in the city coffers. Any future increases would require a referendum vote.
Russell Wayne Burris a six year old boy died in a freak accident near Rodeo New Mexico while riding on a truck driven by his father Russell Burris. He was struck by an A frame mounted on the truck and pronounced dead at 11 34 a m July 1 by Dr J H Baxter. The incident occurred near the grandparents farm Mr and Mrs Harry Turner of Rodeo. The boy s parents are Mr and Mrs Russell Burris of Mesa Arizona.
Alvina B. Aguilera, 39, of Lordsburg, arraigned on open murder charge in the June 30 shooting death of Mary F. Clark. The incident at 4 46 a.m. left Clark dead at the scene. Clark’s husband Joe Clark was in protective custody after the shooting as detectives, with Lordsburg police and state police, investigated and a murder warrant was issued July 2.
Lordsburg Police investigated two larceny complaints and three vandalism incidents during the July 4 weekend. Local officers also directed patrols and responded to calls as part of the holiday period.
