Hidalgo County Grand Jury blasted the Lordsburg Police Department in a July 11 report. Indictments were issued for two jail escapes, Dewayne Underwood and Rickey D. West. The panel criticized training, guidelines adherence, and police blotter copying, urging better reviews, more funds, and stricter misconduct investigations. It also noted issues from 1974 water tank destruction and alleged misconduct, sleeping on duty, and overreach, while keeping sheriff’s department probes open.
Thirty one Hidalgo County youths aged 14 to 21 participate in a CETA Summer Youth Program funded by the Employment Security Commission of New Mexico. Irene Laguna oversees the program. youths work 20 hours weekly from May 31 to August 12, performing public service tasks for Lordsburg, the county, and local schools.
Western Auto kicks off a Summer Savers sale running through September 23 with a full color insert in the Liberal. Featured items include refrigerator freezers tires and batteries plus numerous summer and fall needs.
The Lordsburg Municipal Board of Education hired eight new teachers including Rebecca Benni ger kindergarten Barbara Flowers Maestas kindergarten Kin Alexan der 8th grade Fred LaMarca 8th grade Daniel Maestas 4th grade Beverly Lawson high school librarian Hilario Jaramillo school business and Theresa Fests junior high math. Gary Collins promoted to head high school coach replacing resigning Mike Jones.
The board confirmed Rachelle Altuna as coordinator accompanying Lordsburg High School Community College. It approved Bane's Corp bid of 40,130 for a Title I school building and weighed purchasing vans for activities. A Kerr Agency bid covers general liability and workers compensation insurance. The panel also weighed a resident artist program with the New Mexico Fine Arts Commission for 1977 78 at the high school.
Hidalgo County commissioners heard hospital administrator Sara Callaway report a Doctor of Osteopathy from Hamilton Texas plans to move to Lordsburg and has put his Texas home up for sale. She said the doctor is not considering other areas and Lordsburg is his relocation target. The panel also noted progress on a TV translator for the county with two Albuquerque stations nearing installation on Burro Peak. An additional translator would be needed for Playas Cotton City and Animas.
Bill Willis of Animas was unanimously approved as the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce Director at a Monday night meeting. He succeeds J R Altuna, and the board heard updates on Welcome Center relations, billboard plans, brochure placements in major western cities, and recent expenditures from the Ledger's Tax Fund. The group also voted to shift monthly meetings to the first Thursday at 7 30 p m.
