Most area businesses will be open on Monday July 3 and closed on Tuesday July 4. Among those closed are the Lordsburg Post Office all city county and federal offices excluding emergency services and the First National Bank of Lordsburg.
Democratic sheriff candidate Eugene Moore spent 1448.31, tops among county candidates. Sims Bowers and LeRoy McCarty spent 449.66 and 233.26 respectively, with Moore reporting 525.00 in contributions. Other races show Thygerson 588.69, Collins 955.35, Noce 113.18, Gandara unknown, Veck 533.14, Hatch 184.90, Diaz 334.51, Paulos 236.27, Fisher 65.88, Kerr 301.82, Phillips 681.12, Brooks 64.53. All winners or unopposed in general elections noted.
Hidalgo County commissioners approved a draft fiscal plan for 1979 at a June 27 budget workshop. They set a $13,484,140 preliminary total including $738,346 general fund and $206,791 road fund and approved a $1300 salary for Paramedic Don McNutt. They will refine requests at the next meeting before sending the final budget to Santa Fe for approval. Local Optimists plan a busy Fourth in Lordsburg with pool events, games, a free street dance, and a dusk fireworks display.
Fred H. Holmes, 57, of Tucson, died at 10:10 a.m. Sunday near Red Rock after prospecting with partner F. L. Warren. Investigators ruled the death as due to natural causes, likely a heart attack, and Holmes was transported to Lordsburg and then Heather Funeral Home.
Major Alan Koff orders Police Chief Bob Hall to enforce section 12-8-1 on bicycle operation after numerous near misses with vehicles. Officials note riders must stay right and ride with traffic. citations may follow if parents fail to teach safety to children.
Rodolfo Ramirez of Lordsburg joins New Mexico State University Task Force 88 at its first general meeting. The 88 member panel will forecast NMSU's development through 1988 and 2012 as Las Cruces hosts sessions on campus.
Lordsburg police bring in James C. Hill and Robert T. Simms both of New Albany Indiana after an auto theft near Lordsburg. They face unlawful taking of a motor vehicle charges arraigned before Magistrate Rosa Lina Salinas. A Missouri runaway remained with Arizona juvenile authorities. Both suspects held in Hidalgo County Jail. Lordsburg Board postpones July meeting to July 11 at 7 p.m.
Lordsburg voters approved a two mill levy continuation for capital improvements. In Lordsburg city 209 to 106 favored, Virden 41 to 5, absentee four to none. total 254 yes, 111 no. Use of funds restricted to capital projects, with APB funding via Senate Bill 9. Superintendent Joel Price praised the outcome and planned facilities over two years.
