Fourth of July Festivities Planned in Hidalgo County

Festivities are planned for Lordsburg Playas and Rodeo in Hidalgo County for the Fourth of July. Playas hosts events including a barbecue parade water polo slam dunk free throw contest and more. Lordsburg features events at the Special Events center such as sand volleyball pool tournament 3 on 3 basketball and bowling. Contact AnnaBelle Plowman at the Center for more information.

Rodeo Festivities Draw Parade Marshals Parade on Main Street

Rodeo festivities occur Sunday July 3 starting 6 PM with a Main Street parade. A barbecue and fireworks follow, then dancing to the Joe Diffie band. Parade Marshals Joe and Joyce Schatz named for the event.

Paving Grant Aids Lordsburg Street Overhaul

Lordsburg will reconstruct six to eight North side streets with a $250,000 Community Development Block Grant. The city has pursued the CDBG funding from New Mexico for three years and expects to receive the money in coming months. Work could start after the new year pending bids and weather.

Joaquin Marquez Sr. 68 Dies at Lordsburg Home

Joaquin Anaya Marquez Sr. 68, a Lordsburg resident since 1952 and former Federal Resources miner, died Tuesday June 29 at his home. Visitation Friday at St. Joseph's Church with a 7:00 prayer vigil. funeral liturgy Saturday 10:00 at St. Joseph's, interment Shakespeare Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Aurora, two sons Joaquin and Steve, a stepson Ray Anaya, three sisters, three brothers, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers named. Bacas Funeral Chapels in charge. Also notes July fourth observance closure of Lordsburg Liberal, and summer swimming lessons starting July 5 at the Lordsburg pool taught by Fred LaMarca with contact number. Regular Lordsburg Board of Education meeting Tuesday at 7:00 PM.

Airport Re dedication Honors Former Mayor Alan Koff

Lordsburg Municipal Airport was rededicated Tuesday in memory of former mayor Alan Koff at a brief ceremony. Mayor Salvador Diaz credited funding partners and Armstrong Consultants for planning and engineering, noted three years from start to finish, and said fuel tanks require above ground care. John and Annalee Heemsbergen were introduced as managers, while John Schimmel recalled the 1946 agreement with Koff and noted attendees Fausto Noce and Judy Fisher. Approximately 50 people attended and light refreshments followed.

A Brief History Of The Lordsburg Municipal Airport

Editor notes recount Lordsburg New Mexico aviation history from 1903 Wright brothers flight to 1920 talks with National Airline about making Lordsburg a stop on a New York to Los Angeles route. General Billy Mitchell also examined the airfield, highlighting early significance.

Western Costume Contest At Shakespeare Town Planned

Oceanic Films will stage a period western costume contest on July 24 at Shakespeare Ghost Town in conjunction with the film Doc Holiday the Man and the legend starting July 18. Separate divisions for men women and children offer prizes and a 1879 1880 period dress invitation to join filming. Prizes are 150 75 50 for adults and 50 25 10 for children. Judges will be from out of town.

Re-Numbering Of Residences To Be Undertaken Here

Lordsburg postmaster Bob Sartar announced an August effort to number one feature at each residence in Lordsburg including mail boxes curbs on private property or homes. Homeowner permission needed for private boxes or homes. City Clerk Irene Galvan verifies numbers against the master list. Local civic groups and businesses including Lions Club Elks Lodge Western Bank and E. J. Short have donated to support the plan.
