Santa Fe Chile Processors plant near Cotton City grows plans

Ground broke March 10 for a new food processing plant in Cotton City now expanded from 22,500 to over 30,000 square feet. Jerry Veck, president, says it will operate year round, process vegetables with a focus on jalapeno chiles, and ship about five million pounds the first year mainly to California. Local workers will be used as much as possible, and SBA and Western Bank of Lordsburg and Playas funded the project.

Lordsburg March 1994 election set for mayor council judge

Lordsburg voters head to the polls March 1 1994 for mayor four council seats and municipal court judge. Mayor Salvador Diaz seeks a new term, with several councilors facing reelection or stepping down. Terms run four years with no limits, council pay 40 per meeting up to 160 monthly. Any registered voter may run. applications due before January at City Hall.

Six Cents Gas Tax Goes Into Effect July 1

New Mexico will raise gasoline tax by six cents per gallon starting July 1. The increase received approval from 66 lawmakers and Governor Bruce King with local support from Representatives Thomas D. Foy G. X. McSherry Murray Ryan and Senators Ben Altimirano and John A. Smith. Murray Ryan was the sole Republican voting for the measure.

Playas Hosts Three Day Fourth of July Celebration

The Phelps Dodge Hidalgo Smelter in Playas kicks off June 28 with a tennis event and runs through July 4 featuring horseshoe and golf tournaments in Deming, free throw and slam dunk contests, volleyball, youth all star game, moonlight bowling, horse races, fun run, parade, hamburger fry, water polo, skate demo, a July Fourth barbecue at Playas Park, and more under the theme One People One Hope One Dream.

Lordsburg to Dedicate Airport in Honor of Mayor Alan Koff

Lordsburg's airport will be formally dedicated Tuesday June 29 at 1 00 PM after an 850000 Federal grant funded renovation. The event honors former Mayor Alan Koff who steered the airport’s survival through multiple terms and kept it open with private and public support. Attendees include FAA officials Granite Construction staff Armstrong Consultants and local officials. the ceremony is open to the public.

Hidalgo County Fair Queen Contest Set For August 17

The 1993 Hidalgo County Fair Queen and Princess Contest will select the queen on August 17 at 7 p.m. in the Lordsburg School Cafetorium. Queen contestants are ages 16 to 21 with princesses in four age groups. Little Miss Hidalgo County is age 3-5. Omega Alpha Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha hosts entry details and rules locations, deadline July 31.
