Lordsburg School Board Reconsiders Dress Code

The Lordsburg School Board will revisit student dress standards at junior high and high school, prompted by parent Carr Shannon who urged allowing shorts due to heat. After deliberation on length rules and unclear coulot definitions, a committee will draft a new policy to be voted on at the August meeting with conditions for wearing shorts.

State Tax Hike Pushes Gasoline Price Up in Lordsburg

Lordsburg residents face a 6 cent per gallon tax increase effective July 1 1993 raising price per gallon to 37.5 cents with 14.5 cents to the federal government and 23 cents to New Mexico. Federal funds support highways and oil spill cleanup while state funds cover road maintenance and a petroleum lifting fee. One eighth of state taxes will return to the purchasing county. The GOP urges repeal arguing a projected 200 million overage this year and Governor blocks a special session citing cost and limited legislative support.

Doc Holliday Picture Set For Shakespeare

Oceanic Films announces filming of Doc Holliday the Man and the Legend with Erich Hauser in the title role. Principal photography begins July 17 at Shakespeare Ghost Town. The project highlights Holliday as a complex figure in Wyatt Earp lore and his romance with Kate Elders known as Big Nose Kate.

Telephone Circuit Severed Disrupts 900 Phones

A Western New Mexico Telephone circuit serving about 900 customers including data and alarms was severed Thursday afternoon at 3:00 while power crews worked on a service at 204 Third Street. The outage affected Second, Third and East of Animas streets, with services restored by Thursday night for data and alarms. full circuit back by Saturday 12:30 AM after 1200 pair splicing. A new cable will replace the temporary splice, and crew members from Cliff and Mimbres assisted with repairs.

Vehicle Strikes Guy Wire Triggers Power Outage

On July 1 1993 a west bound I 10 vehicle hit a power line guy wire at Chester Street causing two 70 foot poles to break and lines to fall into traffic. A circuit breaker tripped cutting power to about 800 Lordsburg customers with power restored by 1 00 a m July 2. No injuries reported though vehicle damage noted. Police reports pending investigation into possible oversized load contact.
