Flying Discs Fair At Short Park July Fourth

A Flying Disc Fair sponsored by the American Cancer Society will be held Sunday July 4 at 3:00 p.m. in Short Park with prizes for farthest throw. New Fences Under Construction Along NM 9

New Mexico nine-mile right of way fencing project in Hidalgo and Grant counties moves forward as Fowler Brothers of Silver City builds barbed wire fences gates and cattle guards. The $209720 low bid was submitted in April with completion planned by mid October per project manager Placido Salas.

Insurance Merger Announced for New Mexico Firm

Chuck Olson of Crawford & Olson Insurance in Silver City and Gil bert Buvens of Kerr Agency in Lordsburg announce their insurance businesses will merge to form Insurance New Mexico effective July 1 1982. Buvens, native of Lordsburg, becomes resident partner. Olson holds multiple local posts and bank directorships.

Council Grants Liquor Permit For City Park Bazaar

The City Council split vote approved a special liquor permit for the Knights of Columbus to sell alcohol at the St Josephs Bazaar in City Park with police officer oversight. The council also approved a 1/4 cent gross receipts tax for street repairs effective January 1 1983, opened bids for a $90 000 fire truck, and pass through gas rate increases from El Paso Gas to customers.

Forest officials warn of extreme fire risk from fireworks amid dry grasses on and near Gila National Forest land. Fire Management Officer Don Webb says fireworks could start fires. violations bring minimum $50 fines, seizure of fireworks, and suppression-cost billing. Forest Supervisor Ken Scoggin urges public cooperation to ensure a safe Fourth of July weekend.

James Curtis Kennedy 35 dies in Playas car crash

Butch Kennedy a lifelong Deming area resident and locom otive mechanic at Phelps Dodge in Playas died June 24 in a one car accident in Playas. He was born January 26 1947 in Deming and was a 1966 Deming High School graduate. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel Wednesday at two. Survivors include wife Lydia Kennedy father J C Ike Kennedy mother Marge Montgomery and two brothers Ronnie Joe Kennedy and Charles Chop Kennedy. Wheeler Mortuary in charge.
