Lordsburg Fourth of July Celebration Schedule

The Lordsburg Optimists Club leads a city Fourth of July with a seven mile run at 7 a.m. at the pool, a swimming meet 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., children and adults games 2 to 4 p.m., Little League All-Star and mushball at 4 p.m., and fireworks at dusk. Food and game booths line Short Park with no alcohol sold. events run under local clubs and the city.

Satellite milestone marked at Spacecom launch site

Reporter witnesses Spacecom and NASA engineers correct the first TDRSS satellite at Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center White Sands. George Harris pressed a button at 10 25 A M MDT to boost TDRS 1 into a geosynchronous orbit 22 236 statute miles high. The achievement involved NASA Spacecom and TRW teams performing 39 maneuvers and thousands of commands. Continued on Page Two.

Lordsburg Implements Neighborhood Mail Deposit Units

Lordsburg shifts to neighborhood collection deposit units replacing individual front mailboxes. The new system began Monday June 27 with Ernest Gallegos delivering. Bottled security features include per box keys and coded access, 30 inch deep concrete slabs, tamper proof nuts, and temporary ID numbers later destroyed. Postmaster Andy Elicio says vandalism risk lowers, mail theft reduced, and parking plus safety improve. The change echoes postal evolution from pony express to local box delivery.

Defensive Driving Advisable for Fourth of July Weekend

The Transportation Department cautions motorists to drive defensively during the holiday weekend. Bureau Chief John Fenner urges staying off roads when possible and, if travel is necessary, to use caution, wear seat belts, and watch for others’ violations. Historical data show 1982 had nine fatal highway crashes in New Mexico and an average of eleven fatalities annually from 1979 to 1982, with 577 traffic deaths in the state that year and 44 fatalities across the Fourth of July weekends in the four-year span.
