Budget Cuts Discussed By SWSH Board

The SWSH Board discussed Health and Environment Department funding cuts at a June 28 1983 meeting. They warned that substantial budget reductions would force drastic service cuts, possibly closing program sites by October 1 1983 if funding is not restored. Officials pledged to maintain service quality and improve cooperation with the department to seek funds and solutions.

Lordsburg Independence Festivities Spotlight 1983 July Fourth

Lordsburg hosted a full Fourth of July program with a seven mile race won by Randy Tarango of California in 51 minutes 15 seconds, followed by swimming and diving events for youths, several age group relays, and a Mushball Round Robin Tournament. Contests included 50 and 25 yard swims, back and breast strokes, butterfly, freestyle, and diving, with many local names and a townwide pull of activities, picnics, and a large fireworks display. Prizes included a $100 bill, $50, and $20 drawings, and spectators enjoyed watermelon and cantaloupe slices provided by the Aces softball team.

City meeting backs lighting off ramp lights plan

In a July 5 1983 city Corner column Mayor Pro Tem Arthur Clark Smith reports a meeting with business people to boost the local economy by voluntarily relighting unlit off ramp lights on I 10 at their expense for six months. Each pole would cost $15 monthly in advance, totaling $90, with contracts signed.

Board Accepts Computer Bid For Lordsburg School

The Lordsburg School District board accepted CTA of Las Cruces bid at 31,390.50 for micro computers and related services, rejected Computerland's 46,335.84 bid, and opened other bids for auto liability and workers compensation with Southwest Underwriters leading at 1,845 and 10,015 respectively.

Chamber Luncheon Wednesday at Rico’s Restaurant
