The old water tower south of town near the hospital was torn down by City Superintendent Ted White and his crew early Thursday morning. A tractor pull helped the structure fall, with spectators watching as workers completed the broken legs and lowered the tank after delays.
Slick's Sporting Goods defeated Jim Kinkema 11 4 as E Mesa pitched a two hit win with 12 strikeouts. Ramirez led the nightcap scoring four of five innings in a 9 4 success over CPS. The Radiomen then beat Slick's 14 5 to claim first place in playoff action. Two Little League games were postponed due to a sand blow and rescheduled. Gene Moore edged CPS 7 5 to start activities with the Elks Club 7 4 over Saucedo Food Market in the nightcap.
The First Baptist Church celebrated its 53rd anniversary on Sunday June 26. Organized June 23 1907 with eight members the church building dating from 1909. Morning sermon by Harry P Stagg Albuquerque NM executive secretary of the New Mexico Baptist Convention. Afternoon community singing and talk by Rev David Moore Roswell followed by a basket dinner. Charter members named include Mrs Lucy Marsalis Levi Wright Inez Wright John Bills J A Cappleman and Eva Marshall with Mrs Marshall the only living charter member. Rev Lester D Cochran current pastor.
The notice urges all readers to display the American flag on Monday July 4 marking the 184th year since independence. The emphasis is on citizen participation in a nationwide flag display.
The annual Knights of Pythias barbecue will be held at the K P picnic grounds on July Fourth. Barbecued meat beans bread and coffee will be served to Knights Sisters Sunshine girls and friends. Attendees provide their own plates and utensils. Sisters sell cake and Sunshine girls sell drinks. Games and carnival atmosphere before and after serving at 12 noon.
A city council meeting on MondayJune 27 was held with the door locked excluding the public and press. The event followed two vehicle accidents including a child struck on Main Street and a speeding incident on Penn Street.
Damon Dunagan was installed as president of the Lordsburg Lions Club at a Ladies Night meeting. Installing officer Thomas P. Foy of Bayard presided with Mrs. Foy present. Officers named include Victor Reay, Harold Bishop, Broda McAlister, Lester Cochran, Russell Smith, Lawrence Gay, John Anderson, Wimp Lawrence, Jennings Jarvis, and directors. Outgoing Tail-Twister Arthur Shaw imposed fines as his term ended.
H. G. Baird transferred from Animas to Lordsburg to relieve Frank Flynn as Southern Pacific agent. Mr. Flynn moves to Deming. Baird is married with three children of school age.
