Revenue collections rise under state tax bureau report

Governor John announces a 9.1 percent rise in revenue for the first seven months of the fiscal year with costs reduced. Bureau of Revenue operations now show a 2.80 percent cost and an 8.83 percent pay increase for staff. Total collections reached 493,102 vs prior year. May month saw a 914,192 rise. Liquor, school and other taxes contributed to the gain.

Gene Moore's five run first inning propelled a 8-4 win over Saucedo Food Market in the Little League opener, with Martinez earning the win and Aguilera saddled with the loss. CPS fell 7-2 in a playoff, Texaco won behind Talavera and Medinas RBI, and Ramirez Radio topped Jim Kinkema 8-5 in Pony League action.

Reckless Driver Led Police Chase Across Town

Jailed driver J. T. Gainey faced a long list of counts after a multi-vehicle pursuit. Police units including Lytle Walter Lara and sheriff’s staff chased an errant motorist at speeds over 100 mph. Gainey pleaded guilty to all counts before Judge Albert Stevens.

Cafe Employee Struck in Mouth Injures at Kirby's Cafe

Roland Williams, son of Mr and Mrs Williams, was severely injured in the mouth while working as a waiter at Kirby's Cafe about 2 am on July 3. Filemon Varela and Toby Grinnie allegedly jostled him and one struck him, knocking him out. Juvenile Officer Lalo Sanchez said the Varela and Grinnie boys were cited to appear before Judge H Vearle Payne in Juvenile Court today at 10 am.

Maxwell Returns From Army Service

Arthur F. Maxwell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Maxwell, returned home last Friday after 18 months of duty at Brentwater Air Force Base in England. He is discharged after four years in Japan Okinawa North Africa and England and plans to seek civilian work as a jet engine specialist at Air Force Bases in the Southwest.

Woman Injured In Highway Collision Near Wilma Texas

Mrs. Albert Luttrell of Wilma Texas was seriously injured when a car driven by James Allen of Lordsburg jumped into the Luttrell vehicle at Highway 70 60 three miles east of town. Allen suffered minor injuries and his passenger Fred Farrell was treated for a wrist wound. Luttrell and three children escaped injury.

New Mexico Western College Honors Eighty Students

Eighty New Mexico Western College students earned a grade point average of at least 2.00 or B for the spring semester, according to Dean Donald Overturf. Among them is Lloyd Payne, son of Judge and Mrs H Vearle Payne.

Junior Police Swimming Party Slated Today

Police Chief Frank Aguilera announced a swimming party for Junior Police members at the Municipal Swimming Pool today from 10 to 11 45 a m. He said additional parties and a hot dog feed are planned for later in the summer. Bike safety kits for 100 members have been ordered and are expected soon.

Mayor Koff secures council approval for Victor Reay as fire chief and Frank Aguilera as police chief with acting chief replacement. EF M. Fisher Jr. is reappointed city clerk. A panel to study investing about 40000 idle funds at ~4 percent was named. water protest scope amended and water system expansions planned by Ted White. Bids sought for a new parkage truck to serve residential areas.

Fire Damages Roy Fletcher Ranch Building Near Stock Pens

About midnight on Thursday June 20 a fire damaged a building west of the stock pens at the Roy Fletcher ranch north of town. No livestock burned but tools and equipment were damaged. Lordsburg Volunteer Fire Department controlled the blaze. Owners suspect incendiary origin per Mrs. Ward Dale.
