Richard B. Rice and Harber J. Heather announced candidacies for school board places in the February election. Heather, a Lordsburg native and Navy veteran, runs Heather Mortuary with his father and holds multiple civic memberships. Rice moved from Phoenix to start Lordsburg Auto Parts and leads the Chamber of Commerce with active Lions Club and Knights of Pythias ties.
A bridal shower was held last Sunday at the Valley View Schoolhouse in honor of Mrs William Kerr. About seventy guests attended including out of town visitors Mr and Mrs William McClain of Morenci and Baeuford Martin of Rodeo. A four tier wedding cake was center stage and refreshments were served. The couple married January 7 at Deming New Mexico and are staying at the ranch home of Fred Kerr Sr. for the present.
Gerald Hunt and Robert Tibbs have leased the Parker Magnolia Station on Railroad Avenue and will operate it from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. They invite friends to call on them for anything in their line of business.
Five lots in Ulmoris Addition five miles east of Lordsburg are sold to Charles Akers of Tucson. Akers plans a drive in cafe and motel, with significant investment to make it ultra modern. Ground breaking will occur within two weeks and improvements will begin.
The Fun Club elected officers at the Bennie Everette home. New officers include Betty Sue Stone as Presiding Chairman Sylvester Cunningham Jr. as Finance Officer Patsy Smith as Secretary and Bookkeeper Jim Ewing as Records John Kipp as Assistant Recorder and June Allman as Publicity. A dance is set for February 1 at 8 30 p m at the Woman's Club Building chaperones are Frank Bowman and Mary Louise Noce. Members pay door fee or present cards. Lordsburg Junior Woman's Club will sponsor and supply chaperons from now on.

The Junior Woman's Club hosted a pot-luck supper on Wednesday January 22 at the Woman's Club Building. In charge of arrangements was Mrs. Charlie Foxworth Wie. Members present included Miss Mary Louise Noce and several named hosts. guests listed were Mrs. Harold Scofield and others.
Mrs. Rachel Atkinson hosted house guests from Albuquerque. Monday evening a large group of local youths gathered on the Silver City Highway to honor the Mills family with a weiner roast. Attendees included J. D. Atkinson, Naomi Wood, Ewing siblings, Harvey family, Williams and Williams children, Hugh Atkinson, James Broun, Walter Broun, Eddy Broun, and the Mills and their daughter.
A portal to portal pay case seeks about 50000 back pay against Banner Mining Co of Lordsburg. The International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers CIO filed in U S District Court Santa Fe. Overtime estimated at 35 to 45 minutes per shift covering about four years.
The Army Air Forces will reopen aviation cadet training per a directive to Master Sgt. Claude J. Bridges. Open to qualified regular enlisted personnel on duty with the AAF via the Air Training Command. The 52 week course will lead to pilot rating and a second lieutenant commission, with no flying duty assigned to the AAF.
Led by Emma Scofield State President members from Lordsburg attended the district meeting in Alamogordo. Attendees listed include Bertha Koff Emma Muir Mary Dee Kipp Gladys Sapp Luella Clark Moselle Messecar and Odilee Haltom. A luncheon at the Plaza Club followed talks by Lucy Cobb and remarks on state membership growth.
City officials in Lordsburg reprinted sections of Ordinance 94 to curb daily traffic violations. The rules cover turning behavior backpedaling parking, right of way for moving traffic, blocking intersections, careless driving fines up to 100 dollars, and age limits for drivers with speed limits set at 15 to 25 mph in specified areas.
Earl B. Wilson, head of California and Hawaiian Sugar Refining, warns 1947 sugar supplies remain at least 1,000,000 tons short of public needs and calls for extending government controls through year end. He urges gradual decontrol to avoid 1910s price spikes, backed by California Retail Grocers and Merchants Association and industry allies.

Marshall Kuykendall announces a 62 by 81 foot hangar and a 24 by 60 foot cafe building at Kuykendall Flying Service on the Duncan Highway. Two 2,600 foot runways are finished and the east-west runway will extend to a mile. Veterans Administration and Civil Aeronautics Authority approvals received. A new class of 12 starts Saturday with seven private licenses holder set for commercial work after Feb. 1.
Episcopal Church services will be held at the Lordsburg Hidalgo Library Sunday January 26 1947 at 4 p m. The Rev David E Holt minister in charge of St Pauls Church will read Evening Prayer and deliver an address on Church music. Public invited to all Episcopal services.
Mavericks split three games in a busy stretch. They beat Duncan 32 27 in Duncan, then defeated Lordsburg with strong fourth quarter pressure before losing 39 38 in overtime to Las Cruces. Thomas led scoring with 15 points, Baisa 14, Crain 12.
About 5 000 persons in New Mexico ranching are leasing state lands for grazing rather than buying. Of roughly 12 000 000 state acres, over 11 000 000 are leased at a flat three cents per acre for five years. Land Commissioner John Miles estimates private ownership costs would be about four cents per acre yearly, plus taxes, water, fencing, and improvements.

Hidalgo County residents purchased 135 893 75 in Series F G and U S Savings Bonds during 1946. About 92 793 75 targeted Series EE for a county total that accounts for 48 percent of New Mexico's bond sales. By May 1941 county buyers held roughly two million in U S securities with an annual interest around 40 000. Many used holdings to buy homes enlarge farms or pay expenses.
