Lions Club hosts two dances at Railroad and Fiesta Clubs with $1 tickets to raise funds for polio prevention and treatment. Community notes praise roadwork, housing alerts, and Chamber of Commerce plans urging health, safety, and traffic improvements while reporting local wit and ill gossip.
A farewell luncheon for Mrs Arlo Benson was held at Mrs Clayton Layton Jr s ranch. Guests included Mrs John Bradford Mrs Alton Wren Mrs L R Jones Jr and others. An afternoon of poke no followed with prizes awarded for first and tied low scores.
The Lordsburg Mavericks led early and through three quarters but were outscored in the final period, ending 25 to 27 at Hurley on January 18. Clemente Baica led Lordsburg with 14 points as the top scorer for the season. Lordsburg B team also fell to Hurley B by three points.
Roy Kerr has assumed movement of the City Package and now operates a package store in the Motor Sales Building. Alan Koff remains owner. Kerr, a former Idalgo County sheriff, retired Jan. 1 after a successful two year tenure and invites friends to visit the new base.
The N and T Club met Tuesday at Mrs Emma Muir's home. Guests included Mrs Richard Wischkaemper Olivia Wells Mrs George Jeffus and Mrs Rex Kipp. Regular members present were Mrs Luella Clark Mrs Maud Green Mrs Rebecca Morningstar Mrs R B Ownby Mrs Harold Rolfe and Mrs G W Trimble.

A federal income tax deputy collector will visit Lordsburg and Hidalgo County from February 17 to 21 to assist taxpayers. John W McIaven will meet the public at city hall from 1 to 5 a.m. on February 17 and will hold office hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. February 18 to 21.

Funeral services for John Edward Paulus 83 were held Tuesday at 2 p m. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery with Heather Mortuary in charge. Paulus born 1864 in Missouri came to New Mexico and Arizona 40 years ago for health, lived with Apache at Fort Apache then moved to Tyrone in 1908 to smith spurs for cowboys. He came to Lordsburg in 1912 and ran the first garage with B B Ownby, continuing his blacksmith business at the original site for 35 years.
The Lordsburg Woman's Club will hold a watercolor exhibit Sunday January 26 at the Clubhouse from 3 to 5 PM. This is the second in a series of exhibits for the year. The event opened with a tea at 3 o'clock and the public is invited to attend.
Mrs Eddie Allen was hostess for a luncheon at Hidalgo Coffee Shop with members Mrs Hazel Bavens Mrs B Austin Mrs Luella Clark Mrs Harold Rolfe Mrs Nat Gammon and guests Mrs Farle Kerr and Mrs Harold Scofield attending.
Rev. David E. Moore told the Lordsburg Woman's Club that 1947 civic upgrades should include marked streets and numbered homes, better mail delivery, one way traffic on key streets with traffic lights, a safe underpass, a Hidalgo Garage light, and more playgrounds and beautification to reflect local character.
Plans for two dances to support the March of Dimes project were discussed Tuesday noon at the regular luncheon. Events set for January 25 in this city include community fundraising and local organization involvement.

Pyramid Lodge No. 24 held a Tuesday night meeting in Lordsburg with S. Jack Heather Grand Chancellor for New Mexico outlining plans for the Grand Lodge session in September. A new class of candidates was discussed to honor a veteran member. Ralph B. Mason and Paul Tooley were knighted, and the lodge scheduled its regular entertainment night for next Tuesday.
Mrs Rex Kipp has learned her piece on Cloudcroft New Mexico titled Playtown In the Clouds will appear in the March issue of New Mexico Magazine. The acceptance marks another publication for the author in the regional periodical.
Lordsburg Mavericks edge Virden 16 to 15 in a highly defensive local contest. Mavericks lead early and stay within four points, while Virden dominates field goals but misses free throws. Preliminary game sees Virden B Team beat Lordsburg B Team in a close affair.
The Rev. Wm. McMahon pastors the Church of the Nazarene at Seventh and Shakespeare with Sunday school at 10 a.m. morning worship at 11 a.m. Evangelistic services follow, with mid week services at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.
The Paramount Construction Company of Deming was the low bidder for concrete paving at Lordsburg Airport. Alan Koff, operator, announced the award this week. Carl Francisco, owner, nears completion of the Chevrolet house here and a contract was let for painting the hangar interior and exterior. Three repairmen began work this week as the field remains open to aerial traffic.

Sharon Bowman celebrated her fourth birthday Tuesday with a party at her home. A cake and ice cream were served to family members including Mr. and Mrs. E S Bowman and others such as Mr. and Mrs Allen Bowman Mark David Kathleen Bowman Bennie Everett Moselle Messecar Frank Bowman and Jill Bowman.
Lew Robinson announced construction of a Ritter Walker Company warehouse just north of the Highway 70 underpass. The 4000 square foot facility, built in a quain set hut style with a steel frame, sheet iron cover and concrete floors, is planned for completion by February 15.
Work of cleaning and painting the interior of the city water tower is finished. City utilities superintendent Sam H. Gass reports exterior painting is underway. During interior work pumps kept mains pressurized and chlorination was used until chlorine dissipated.
Hobbs beer retailer has been refused further supplies pending correction of conditions contrary to the public welfare. Chas. J. Huff of the U S Brewers Foundation said the tavern operator ignored recommendations after an inspection and observed conduct. The action is part of a plan to maintain compliance with legal and moral obligations.
Henry Ellison was named to the Lordsburg Commerce board to fill a vacancy created by R B Rice. He will serve two years. R B Ownby Eugene Romney elected in December met with the group. George Jeffus was elected vice president. Committee chairs chosen include Ownby program of work Romney ship and finance Chavez roads and highways Culberson cattle and rodeo Gammon conventions Baxter health and safety Rolfe aviation Foster mine and industry Powell public relations. The board discussed liaison with the New Mexico delegation on Lordsburg Prisoner of War Camp and urged health certificate enforcement for food handlers and parking rules on several streets. A map service by 2 000 maps shows Sunshine belt air traffic. Col Holt's services were terminated and the secretary's salary raised.
A public installation ceremony for the Order of Rainbow for Girls was held at 8 o'clock Saturday night in Hall. Deming Community Concert Group announces James Pease baritone will perform Monday at 8 15 p m at Deming City Hall. It is the second offering of the season by the Deming Community Concert Association. Lordsburg residents hold memberships in the association.
First National Bank vice president J A Foster confirmed the bank purchased the city general obligation bonds used to pave several streets. The bank bought the entire series, reflecting local officials’ faith in the bank.
Episcopal Church services to be held at the Lordsburg Public Library on Sunday January 1947 at 4 p m. The Rev E Holt minister in charge of Pauls Church will read Evening Prayer and deliver an address on Church inviting all to attend.
