Eight candidates file in Lordsburg city election

City Clerk Lupe Rivera reports eight Lordsburg residents filed for the March election. Incumbent Mayor Alan Koff and Mayor Pro Tem Stephen Hill seek the mayor’s seat. Ward candidates include Manuel Ramirez, Harriet Malott, Christobal Musquiz, Jon Thomas Brotz, and Judge Jesus Estrada seeking re election against Fausto Noce Jr. A ballot question asks voters to switch to four councilors.

Magistrate Rosa Salinas Gets Improved Court Office

Magistrate Rosa Lina Salinas finally receives a refurbished workspace after five years of housing in a library room and jail quarters. The 205 E. 2nd St. office now features new upholstery, desks, shelves, and a copy machine, replacing prior improvised furnishings. December saw court activity totaling over 10 000 dollars in fines, costs, and bonds forfeited, predominantly from trucking firms at the Port of Entry. Salinas was rated the second best magistrate court outside Albuquerque by the Administrative Office of Courts of New Mexico last year.

Petition Seeks City Utilities Referendum in Lordsburg

A petition presented Jan 21 requests a citywide vote to divest Lordsburg utilities from Public Service Commission control. State officials have previously ruled the utilities. Attorney Friedman notes filing could occur on or after March 31 1982, contingent on voter decision. Lupe Rivera states 25 percent of last election electorate signatures are required, a shortfall is reported.

Local MVD Sells 1982 Registration Stickers in Lordsburg

1982 registration stickers are on sale at the Lordsburg Motor Vehicle office. The public is urged to buy now to avoid long lines. Penalties apply after March 2. If 1982 renewal form is missing, bring 1981 registration or title to receive a 1982 sticker per an MVD spokesman.

A regular meeting of the Lordsburg Municipal Board of Education is scheduled for Tuesday February 2 at 7 pm in the board room at Lordsburg Municipal Schools located at 501 West Fourth Street.

Western New Mexico University Continuing Education Registration

Registration is ongoing at Western New Mexico University Continuing Education Office from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday. Courses cover Arts and Crafts Bonne Cuisine Business and Finance and more with four to 14 week durations starting the first week of February. Course costs range from 20 to 115 dollars. New Erosion Control Method on Hidalgo County Roads

Hidalgo County highway workers begin using galvanized rock-filled baskets to stabilize eroding roadside trenches along Highway 90. Supervisor Jerry McNutt notes the baskets, sized about two by four by ten feet, trap mud and vegetation to seal against runoff and prevent visible erosion.

Planned Parenthood closes Lordsburg and Truth or Consequences offices

Planned Parenthood of Southwest New Mexico shut its Lordsburg office on January 28 due to a 70 percent funding cut and will close the Truth or Consequences location this week. Patients can transfer records to Silver City or Deming offices.
