A public meeting is scheduled for Friday February 12 at 4 00 P M at the Hidalgo County Courthouse. The notice invites interested residents and stakeholders to attend and observe the proceedings.
At Wednesday's City Council meeting JOhn Schimmel led a discussion over new vehicles carried over from January. Councilor Smith urged rejecting 4 ton and accepting 2 ton bids while proposing a mini-size truck. Alvirez moved to reject the % ton bid and approve Busby Motors 12 ton pickup for 6875.96, then to seek bids on a mini four cylinder four speed truck.
Seven truck tires were stolen from a tire rack at the Shady Grove Truck Stop during the night of January 21 to January 22. The padlock was cut with bolt cutters and tires by Michellin and Goodyear Unisteel valued between 310 and 684 dollars each, totaling about 2294 dollars. Hidalgo County Crime Stoppers offer up to 500 dollars for information leading to arrest and indictments, with additional rewards for major felonies countywide. Call 542-8200.
The 1980 census spurred a special session to redraw the state’s three Congressional districts. Hidalgo County would be split with southern parts in District 32 and northern parts in District 39. District 32 will include parts of Luna and towns such as Playas and Cotton City with 5000 more residents than the norm. District 39 previously represented by Thomas P. Foy, will cover northern areas near Cotton City. Hidalgo remains in Senate District 35, with I. M. Smalley as the senator. Von Rue Crawford says he will not seek re election.
Richard Dick Traylor 73 died January 13 in El Paso after a life as a noted educator and community leader. Born November 12 1909 in Morro Texas he held multiple roles including Hidalgo County Teachers Association president and NEA NM Hall of Fame member. He is survived by his wife Jane two brothers seven nieces and nephews and many friends. Funeral services were held February 3 in Lordsburg with Masonic services and burial in Ruidoso.
City Cable TV spokesman says picture quality on channel 2 worsened after a new translator south of town. On Feb 11 and 12 a crew will swap channel assignments so channel 22 appears on channel 2 and Tucson channel 9 on channel 5. Some service interruptions may be needed to complete the change.
Funeral services for Mrs Refugia Q Medina lifelong Lordsburg resident were held February 1 at St Josephs Catholic Church following a January 29 1982 death at Hillcrest General Hospital Silver City. She was born April 6 1896 daughter of Guadalupe and Casamida Quevedo and widow of Francisco Medina. Survived by two sons Guadalupe Varela Norberto Q Varela. three daughters Aurora Ruiz Clara Diaz Elena V Altamirano. one brother Ramon Quevedo. 22 grandchildren 50 great grandchildren four great great grandchildren. Rosary January 31 at Heather Chapel with Father Sam Garcia. burial Shakespeare Cemetery. Grandsons Victor Diaz Joaquin Altamirano Reynaldo Varela Johnnie Ruiz Sal Diaz Jr Joe Diaz served as pallbearers.
Lordsburg School Board met at the high school with Principal Phil DeFoor presenting on New Mexico School Activities Association alignment and playoff site plans. Curriculum Director Charles Hayes reported on local student assessment and ACT participation. board addressed audits, gates, contract extensions, and an executive session on Athletic Director salary survey.
Fausto Noce Jr announces candidacy for the City Municipal Court judgeship. A Lordsburg native raised in the local school system, he now works with family, belongs to the Elks, and attends St. Joseph's Church. He is married to Juanita with two daughters, Angie and Erica, and vows full cooperation with law enforcement and city administration, available 24/7.
