He notes New Mexico produces 13 percent of U.S. mined copper with Phelps Dodge supplying over half, cites 1981 employment, wages, taxes, and NM supplier purchases, and explains price declines tied to high interest rates and weak durable goods demand, urging four cost-focused actions including environmental rule relief and tax provisions to sustain operations.

Seven D Hill announced his run for mayor of Lordsburg, a lifelong resident and current City Council member acting as mayor pro-tem. He pledges an open, efficient city government, collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and County, and growth while stressing belief in Lordsburg.
In Hidalgo County 6th District Court Judge Norman Hodges handled multiple cases. Elfigo Graham changed his plea to guilty on burglary of a vehicle, criminal damage to property, and assault on a police officer. sentence set for January 28. Jacob Renteria awaiting jury trial for burglary of a vehicle on February 25. Susan Talavera received a deferred sentence of 18 months, probation for 18 months, a six month suspended jail term, and a $500 fine with $200 suspended.
Phelps Dodge Corporation announced an immediate price cut for whole plate electrolytic copper cathodes to 77 cents per pound, down from 79 cents. The move lowers material costs for buyers and may influence market pricing.
The Animas School District donated a commercial cooking range and stove to the Hidalgo County Senior Citizens. J W McCarty and Leon Evans delivered it to Smith Ford with services from Kiki Chaires Manny Rendon and Elias Rendon. Joe Croom mediated with county and school officials.
In 1981 Hidalgo Emergency Medical Services answered 698 calls with 379 to hospitals, 102 to doctors, and 217 resolved at the scene. Critical cases totaled 117 with 214 in the less severe group. 68 accidents occurred with 25 percent requiring patient extraction. Drug related episodes reached 45, with 132 heart monitoring cases and 40 fire responses. Monthly activity varied, February 75, January 69, December 68, May 67, with winter months accounting for 52.9 percent of activity. The Lordsburg EMTS district is radio controlled from the Sheriff’s Office and staffed by three full time employees, plus seven volunteers. Chief Deputy Rudy Lara, previously Sheriff, was dismissed for unsatisfactory performance and is a candidate for Hidalgo County Sheriff in the Democratic Primary. Ambulance crews operate in Animas and Rodeo districts with volunteers.
