The Bureau of Land Management announced contracts completed near Lordsburg and Animas. Murel G. Mahan of Deming finished grubbing about 1000 acres of creosote brush south of Lordsburg. Preston Tomlinson of Deming awarded a fire break truck trail project 20 miles southwest of Animas. Districts three and four advisory board members from Lordsburg attended the January 14 meeting in Las Cruces, and the fiscal year grazing administration and conservation programs were discussed and approved.

Injured Missionary in Mexico After Blowtorch Blast
Darrow Richins Jr. was severely burned when a gasoline blowtorch exploded while repairing a dental chair in Apizaco Tlaxcala Mexico for the L D S Church. His parents in Cotton City were advised of his injuries and later learn he is recovering and regaining hand use.

Boy Scout Camporee Held January 15 16 17
A two night campout in the Geronimo district of Yucca Council ran January 15 16 17 for 165 boys and 20 adults at Red Mountain nine miles west of Deming. The Order of the Arrow led advanced training and inducted new Lordsburg scouts Chuck McGhee Robby Williams Elwin Roark Carl Stewart and Felipe Martinez. Post 120 prepared four weekly safety items and planned a four merit badge show in Lordsburg in March with 18 boys from troop 120 and six from Ex post 120 assisted by Scoutmaster Clyde Stewart.

New Mexico senators and representatives met with Veterans Administration officials and won assurances Fort Bayard VA Hospital would not close or transfer patients until further talks. They argued 300 mile travel to Albuquerque is a burden, and urged increasing VA beds and funds instead of shutting down Fort Bayard.
