County Jail Inmate Enrique Mejia Dies By Self Harm
Inmate Enrique Ruiz Mejia, 36, was found hanging by a towel from a cell bar in the county jail around 7 p.m. January 29. Inmates and jail staff attempted resuscitation but he was pronounced dead. A coroner's jury ruled death by own action. Mejia had pled guilty to marijuana possession and was awaiting sentence. He had previously attempted self harm on January 16 and was refused admission to Ft Bayard Veterans Hospital.

Hidalgo County saw more farmers join the 1964 Agricultural Conservation Program than any ASCS activity. Sixty seven cooperated in ACP with cost-share funds highlighting soil and water preservation.
