Jack Morgan Named Heart Fund Chairman For Hidalgo County

County Jail Inmate Enrique Mejia Dies By Self Harm

Inmate Enrique Ruiz Mejia, 36, was found hanging by a towel from a cell bar in the county jail around 7 p.m. January 29. Inmates and jail staff attempted resuscitation but he was pronounced dead. A coroner's jury ruled death by own action. Mejia had pled guilty to marijuana possession and was awaiting sentence. He had previously attempted self harm on January 16 and was refused admission to Ft Bayard Veterans Hospital.

PTA Narcotics Program Set for February Meeting

The PTA will hold its regular meeting Monday February 8 at 7 30 pm in the Cafetorium. Chief C L Rogers and officers present a narcotics program with four talks and up to four films to explain narcotics dangers coping methods and addiction seriousness. Rogers will speak on school security and the public is invited.

Lordsburg Board of Aldermen schedules a public hearing on proposed by pass routes for the city. The session is set for February 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Study Hall. Maps at City Hall display from 6 to 7 p.m. February 4 with board reps ready to answer questions.

Participation Greater For 1964 Hidalgo ACP

Hidalgo County saw more farmers join the 1964 Agricultural Conservation Program than any ASCS activity. Sixty seven cooperated in ACP with cost-share funds highlighting soil and water preservation. Chairman Ww. C. Miller notes several practices including land leveling and erosion controls. The program reduces barriers for farmers to participate with government support. Nationally, over two million farmers participate.
