The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber urges letters to New Mexico lawmakers opposing the Veterans Hospital closure at Ft Bayard and outlining travel hardships. A council meeting discusses a highway by pass with plans to hold a public meeting after reviewing an aerial photo and awaiting citizen input before further action.
The Lordsburg High School basketball team hosts a homecoming game on Saturday January 23 followed by a homecoming dance. The queen and her court will attend to honor the team with music by the Kingsmen. Everyone is invited to attend.
Home Economics students will present a style show on January 25 at 7 30 p m in the Cafetorium. Home Economics II will model cotton dresses and Home Economics III wool suits. The public is invited to attend.
Mavericks defeat Quemado 58 49 to hand them third loss and reach the final. Lions Murray scores 17 leads locals as Ruben Bassa and John La Marca add 12 and 10. Final 73 67 over Sanders with Joey Gonzales delivering a decisive one and one.
At a special meeting representatives from the State Highway Dept outlined two by pass routes to reroute traffic around the city. Both options include interchanges at Main Street and a grade separation at Animas Avenue. Citizens urged finishing urban rebuilding before by pass work and a public meeting will be held in a few weeks to gather input.
The body of a man about 45 was found beside the highway 16 miles east of Lordsburg by state highway maintenance workers at 10:30 am on Wednesday. Identified as Joseph Fekany from a Social Security card and a Florida bank account, the victim wore a service station shirt rented to a Deming station. Police say tire tracks showed a car left the road and swerved into a ditch, then returned, without stopping. An inquest attributed death to severe head injuries and a broken neck, with possible life after injuries. This fatality raises January traffic deaths in the state to 13.
The community is invited to the dedication service of the First Baptist Church this Sunday starting 11 a.m. A basket lunch is planned at 12:30 p.m. and the program continues through 3 p.m. A large crowd is expected for the open house and worship as the church is rededicated.
The second Sabin polio vaccine will be administered at Hidalgo County Health Department on Wednesday January 27. It will be offered at Rodeo on February 1 and at Animal on February 2. All pre school age children are eligible.
Two related crashes on Highway 70 80 east of Lordsburg left seven dead and four injured. A west bound car and trailer struck by a truck killed three Whitmire family members and injured others, while a later collision involving a bus type vehicle killed four more Wichita, Kansas residents and injured another.
