A special Wednesday meeting saw Lordsburg officials publicly oppose a proposed commercial landfill near the city and its water wells. The council promised to lobby legislators by phone and letter to block the plan.
Hidalgo and Lordsburg officers led a dawn raid seeking 22 suspects on warrants for offenders drugs and stolen property. Sheriff Darnell said 2000-3000 dollars of property recovered and drugs with street value 1200-1500 dollars. 2000 dollars spent to buy drugs during the operation. 17 suspects detained. 5 warrants still outstanding. Assistants included Silver City Deming Luna and Grant county agencies Border Patrol Customs State Police and Mounted Patrol.
A proposed landfill site about 24 000 acres east of Lordsburg near the SP Railroad and I-10 is under consideration for waste from a globe spanning garbage scow. The inland disposal location would be close to Lordsburg's water supply and would accept cargo in closed containers.
The Innovative Environmental Systems proposal for a New Mexico landfill would involve remote waste from across the state and the U S, with an expected 50 year life. Albuquerque Journal reporter Leon Kolankiewicz cites that New Mexico lacks landfill permitting, notes 1.5 million tons dumped yearly into 200 plus landfills, and mentions groundwater contamination risks from unlined sites.
Lordsburg High School invites the public to view science fair entries Friday January 27 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Winners will be tagged first through third and advance to the Regional fair in Las Cruces.
Jim Myers aged 38, born March 27 1950 in Separ NM, passed away January 16 1989 in Tucson AZ. He was a U S Army veteran who served in Germany, truck driver of gasoline tankers, and member of NRA Elks and Teamsters. Survivors include wife Teresa and three sons, plus a sister, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. Cremation completed with no services held.
Mercedes Hernandez Garcia 87 of Lordsburg died Thursday at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City. Visitation began Friday at Baca's Heather Funeral Chapels with a rosary that evening. Mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church followed by burial at Virden Cemetery. She was born December 1901 in Durango Mexico and was a homemaker. Survivors include six sons and three daughters. Pallbearers named from family and friends.
Eva Estella Pursley 65 of Animas died Monday at Gila Regional Hospital Silver City. Graveside funeral Friday at Middle Animas Cemetery with Pastor Lloyd Richie officiating. Born August 29 1923 in Douglas Arizona she was a seamstress and lived in Animas eight years after moving from Deming. Survivors include two sons William and Sam Pursley a daughter Ann Sanders two brothers a sister six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Baca Heather Chapel in charge of arrangements.
A special meeting of the Hidalgo County Commissioners is set for Friday February 3 1989 at 1:00 p.m. The agenda includes discussion of the County Personnel Policy and other topics. The public is invited.
In the Elks Hoop Shoot finals at Animas High School, 24 players from Animas and Lordsburg competed for Hidalgo County. Hugo Mendoza of Lordsburg led the 12-13 bracket with 21 makes on 25 attempts, securing top honors and a spot in the District Championship in Alamogordo on February 11. Other qualifiers include Jenny Hopkins 12-13, Tyler Hopkins 10-11, Trachel Mortensen 10-11, Art Ruiz 8-9, and Amy Richardson 8-9.
