A community meeting will be held Friday February 3 at Lordsburg High School Cafetorium to discuss the proposed waste materials dumpsite. Senate Bill 2 will be explained and a company representative tied to the project will present its views to residents.
City Policeman Rusty Umphres pursued two Louisiana prison escapees from Freeway Chevron after a gas skip worth 21.70 dollars. Deputies Ed Kessler and Bob Kramer joined near the Gary overpass, with the suspects fleeing west on I-10 toward Road Forks and US 80 before turning south to Rodeo. The car was reported stolen and the chase intensified as units attempted to intercept near Road Forks.
The legislative session considers Senate Bill 2 regulating landfills. A hearing is set in Santa Fe on Monday February 6. Mayor Arthur Clark Smith and Councillors McDonald Morelos and Musquiz will attend with others who can arrange schedules. A public forum on the bill is planned in Lordsburg Friday February 3 at Lordsburg High School Cafetorium. For details call city halls.
Eva Estella Pursley 65 of Animas died Monday at Gila Regional Hospital in Silver City. Graveside funeral was held Thursday January 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Middle Animas Cemetery with Pastor Floyd Richie officiating. Born August 29, 1923 in Douglas, Arizona she was a seamstress. Survivors include two sons William J. Pursley of Playas and Sam W. Pursley of Animas, one daughter Ann Sanders of Safford, two brothers Tom Moorhead of McNeal and Jim Moorhead of Bisbee, one sister Normal Pursley of Bisbee, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Baca Heather Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Animas voters on February 7 will vote on a two mill property tax for 1989 1990 and 1991 to fund asbestos removal roof repairs and remodeling at the school district. The levy would add about two dollars per thousand of assessed value and is projected to raise 104 000 annually for three years. Lordsburg Board of Education to meet February 7 at 7 00 p m in the Board Room.
Voters in Hidalgo County face school board elections on Tuesday February seven with two districts voting on board members. Animas ISD adds a two mill property tax question for three years to fund school improvements. Several contested races list candidates for four year terms and no write-ins are reported. Absentee voting at the Court House. polls open seven a.m. to seven p.m. February seven nineteen eighty nine.
More than 60 exhibits filled Lordsburg High School last Friday with Brian Culberson winning for Acid In the Sky Monica Guardiola took second for Concentrate with Music and James Overturf earned third with Parachute. Judges were George Craig Darrell Goodman and John Schimmel. Sponsor was Jim Balentine. Winners advance to the Regional Fair at Las Cruces.
Irene Scott Williams 65 of Deming died January 27 in El Paso at Providence Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held February at Baca's Funeral Chapel with Rev. Steven Chappell officiating. Interment at Mountain View Cemetery with Eastern Star presiding. Born March 17, 1923 in Bellaire Ohio she was a homemaker and Deming resident since 1980. Survivors include husband Robert Arthur Williams II son Robert Arthur II and Roland Hatcher brother Harry T. Scott sister Bessie Scott John and three great grandchildren. Memorials may go to Deming Senior Citizens Center. Bacas Funeral Chapels in charge.
