The Motor Vehicle Division urges motorists to renew by February 15 via mail order. Return all renewal copies with payment to the division. After February 15 renewals require in person at a local field office with potential lines. March 2 is the sticker display deadline. Call 1-800-432-2013 for missing 1980 statements.
Phelps Dodge chairman George B. Munroe told about 200 state business leaders at the seventh annual luncheon that New Mexico copper prospects for the 1980s look brighter than the past five years. He cited strong demand, reduced inventories, and a rebound in prices as key factors, while noting 1979’s gains were modest after inflation. He added uranium mining and cattle ranching also drive New Mexico activity and discussed long term contract risks in uranium pricing.
Moore lifelong Hidalgo County resident announces candidacy for County Treasurer. Former four year treasurer in the 1950s and deputy treasurer since 1979. Active in Lordsburg Methodist Church and several local organizations. One son, one daughter, four granddaughters. Daughter Janell Dunagan Alexander works as bookkeeper in Lordsburg. Primary vote on June 5.
The U S Forest Service distributed 7,771,367 to counties in New Mexico and Arizona as their 2S per cent share of National Forest income for the fiscal year ending Sept 30. Payments come from timber, grazing, recreation, minerals and other sources and support public schools and roads. Southwestern New Mexico counties received 1,234,184 of the state 2,892,293 share, allocated to Grant 173,354 Catron 98,618 Hidalgo 1,502 and Sierra 71,710.
Hidalgo County Assessor Robert Kerr announces tax evaluation notices are going out listing name, address, district, and land and improvements. He urges recipients to review notices for changes before March 1 1980, while veterans and heads of household may file exemptions.
Mrs. Pablo Diaz received a special recognition certificate from the Lordsburg City Council for the late Councilman Gilbert Mora presented on behalf of the city. Mayor Alan Koff extended sympathy, noting the hunting death in 1979 and praising the late councilman's service.
Kennecott Copper Corporation plans a 280 million concentrator at Santa Rita in Grant County to modernize the China Mines Division. The plant will process 37 500 tons per day, send concentrates to Hurley for smelting via pipelines, and pump tailings there. About 500 families may move into Grant County as construction starts in about a year. Environmental rules pose problems and a year of engineering remains.
A January 21 Lordsburg Centennial Queen Contest drew a capacity crowd at the school cafetorium. Contestants in three age groups performed talent numbers and answered questions. Winners were Felicia Gomez Miss Future, Yvette Koebke Miss Present, and Ena Mitchell Miss Past with runners-up named in each category. Entertainment was provided by Carol Bryan and the Dugan Tarango Middle School Chorus.
