A Deming gas skip led to the arrest of a Springfield Illinois man by Hidalgo County officers after a Deming Police Department call on January 28. The incident involved local law enforcement responding to information from the Deming Police Department and resulted in the suspect’s apprehension.
Hidalgo Countian Richard Mejia announces use of Democratic nomination for Hidalgo County Sheriff in the June primary. Mejia, a Lordsburg native and 1973 Lordsburg High School graduate, is a former deputy who resigned December 31, 1979, and trained at Western New Mexico University Police Academy. He vows to improve law enforcement and attend town meetings in outlying areas.
The Honorable Robert M. Doughty of the 12th Judicial District is designated presiding judge in a lawsuit between the City of Lordsburg and a former city Police Coordinator. Sherry Bales sues for 500000 alleging retaliation after testifying in a bribery probe involving two officers. Two Sixth District judges are disqualified.
The Centennial Committee of Lordsburg sponsors a five mile Fun Run on Saturday March 22 with three age based groups. Entry fees are 1 for under eight, 2 for ladies two miles, and 5 for open five miles. Pre register by March 1 at City Hall.
Twelve Lordsburg residents filed to run for five city council seats in the March 4 election. On the Better Government ticket are Felipe Alvarez Ward 3 four years, Herbert Collins Ward 1 four years, Clark Smith Ward 2 four years, Manuel Ramirez Ward 4 two years, and Stephen Hill Ward 4 four years. George Basabilvazo, appointed by Mayor Koff, seeks Ward 1 four years. Albert Martinez, another Koff appointee, seeks Ward 4 four years. Also running: Ruben Bejarano and George Craig Ward 4 two years, Ruby Warren, Gerald Fuller, and Gilbert Mora Ward 2 four years. Mora works for the Postal Service. Warren is a school secretary. Fuller is a retiree. Mora sits on the Board of Education. Voters will also decide if municipally owned utilities should be regulated by the New Mexico Public Service Commission. Registration closed January 22.
Charles T. Babers 50, longtime Southern Pacific Transportation Company executive, is named general manager for the railroad’s Western operations covering California Oregon Nevada Utah Arizona New Mexico and El Paso Texas. Babers joined SP in Tucumcari New Mexico in 1950 and held posts in El Paso Carrizozo Lordsburg Los Angeles Bakersfield Yuma Portland and Portand. He studied at the University of Texas at El Paso and the University of Eastern New Mexico and completed Harvard Business School’s Management Development Program. He lives in San Mateo.
Cafeteria manager Louise Peterson says rising costs prompt labor and nonfood cutbacks but demand higher prices. Officials note current student meals at 45 to 50 cents and 80 cents for adults, with possible 20 to 25 cent increases to break even as federal reimbursements rise.
New Mexico Secretary of State Shirley Hooper warns the February 4 1980 deadline to file and adapt party affidavits for the 1980 primary.
