New Interstate 10 signs installed by the State Highway Department under the innovative signing program provide motorists with counts of local campgrounds motels restaurants and modern service stations. Five signs posted at eastern and western Lordsburg approaches. Erected by J M Supply Co of Albuquerque after submitting the low bid for the statewide project at 416413 dollars. Other signs placed near T or C on I 25 and at Santa Rosa on I 40.
Ellinwood, 35, Democrat, announced Tuesday his candidacy for District Attorney of the Sixth Judicial District. He has served as D.A. for Luna, Hidalgo and Grant counties since June 1979 after Gov. Bruce King appointed him following J.C. Robinson’s resignation. He previously served as Assistant D.A. to Robinson from 1977 to 1979 and has been in private practice and a contract public defender. He cites growth in the district and promises competent legal services, better coordination among law enforcement, and continued modernization of the office. He and wife Phyllis live on a Luna County ranch and have three daughters.
Asa Kelly former assistant DA to the late Dave Senna from 1972 to 1977 announced his bid for the Democratic nomination for District Attorney. He previously ran in 1978 against J C Robinson carrying Hidalgo and Luna but losing in Grant County. Kelly, a Silver City resident in private practice, criticized district attorney overreach and plea bargains and outlined campaign directions.
Hidalgo County deputies probe an armed home invasion in Lordsburg in which two white male suspects tied up a 71-year-old man, struck him with a gun and shocked him to obtain a safe containing gold nuggets, silver dollars, pre war and rare coins. No injuries reported. Call 542-9131 with tips. Also a rabies clinic is set for Saturday January 19 at the Lordsburg Fire Station from 10 am to 2 pm hosted by the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Humane Society.
Lordsburg High School teacher Norm Brines and Western New Mexico University student Paul Flores built a micro computer program to let Royce Stephenson who is cerebral palsy communicate via yes or no input. The system reads a TV screen vocabulary and prints selected words, with plans to expand memory and let Royce write letters. Community funding and Elks Cerebral Palsy support backed the project as Royce awaits full operation at Lordsburg Sunshine Haven Home.
