Charles J. Lloyd aged 88 died after being crushed beneath a Southern Pacific locomotive at the Pyramid Street crossing. Funeral services are set for Sunday at Heather Mortuary with Knights of Pythias and Lordsburg Lodge involved. Lloyd, born in 1859 in Spring Arbor Michigan, long operated as a carpenter in Lordsburg and is survived by a sister in California and an unnamed daughter.
H Vearle Payne a Lordsburg lawyer and state legislator was re elected speaker of the New Mexico House as Democrats hold the majority in Santa Fe. Gov Thomas Mabry urged reforms including school fund distribution property valuation farm to market roads and veterans aid in his joint session address.
Funeral services were held for Leong Chong Louis 99 a pioneer resident of Lordsburg. He was found dead Saturday with a coroners jury attributing death to natural causes. Louis, likely born in China, had lived in Lordsburg many years with no surviving relatives.

Local business updates include the Kerrs purchasing a tax service and insurance agency and moving to a new Levin Kerr home. The Lordsburg Lions Club announced ten new members at a Tuesday meeting including Jack Morgan Glenn Dorsett Arthur Richards and others. Melvin Jones, a Lions International leader, was highlighted. plans for a Virden organization and the March of Dimes drive were discussed.
Lord's Day services listed at 10 a.m. Bible school guided by D N Williams, 11 a.m. worship, 6:30 p.m. life study for Young People, and 7:30 p.m. evening worship. Minister Chas Fogliasso invites all to attend at 5th and Pyramid Streets.
Sheriff Oscar Allen announced the appointment of Fred C. Kerr as deputy sheriff and George Wright as deputy at Animas. Kerr is a World War II veteran who served with the Army Air Forces in Europe.

Glenn Dorsett was named royal vizier of Tasheed No. 99 Dokey Temple in an officers election Wednesday night, succeeding R. B. Rice. Other officers elected include F. C. Bowman grand emir, Jack Kirby Mahedi, Ray Alsbury sheik, R. B. Ownby secretary, A. A. Powell treasurer, and B. Kimbley ene and A. A. Richards. The temple, organized weeks ago, will serve during 1947.
If reports are correct, the Lordsburg Prisoner of War Camp was sold not to the city or local schools but to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation for resale to small business. The editorial questions RFC priorities, payment amounts, and where veterans will access facilities, urging local residents to demand answers and preserved public use.
Hidalgo County cattle growers joined the Annual Convention of the American National Livestock Association in Phoenix Arizona from January 8 to 10. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Tom Clayton Sr Rex Kipp Sherwood Culbertson Mr and Mrs Harry Day Mrs Faye Clayton and Charlie C Martin led by George A Godfrey president of the New Mexico Livestock Association. The next convention will be held in Boise Idaho in 1948.
The U S Army Recruiting Service opened a branch office in the City Hall building on January 6 1947. M Sgt Claude J Bridges will be in charge. Sgt Bridges from Quemado New Mexico joined the Army in 1940 and served with the Air Forces duringWorld War II.
Dorothy Strickland daughter of Mr and Mrs T B Strickland of Animas and Marx Brook son of Mr and Mrs A Brook of Los Angeles married January 3 by Judge E C Gober in Albuquerque. The bride, a UNM senior, plans to continue studies after a short wedding trip. Her grey wool suit and purple orchid corsage described. Brook, a University graduate, is pursuing a physics doctorate at UCLA. Jose Teresi and Mrs Teresi witnessed.
The Rev. David E. Moore, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will be the principal speaker at 4 p m Monday for the Lordsburg Woman's Club. Mrs Edwin Brown will sing. The public is invited to hear Rev Moore discuss civic improvements. A 3 p m business meeting precedes the program.
A surprise birthday party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. N. Williams on Friday January 10 honoring Mrs. Rachel Atkinson. Attendees included Joe Wood and daughter Naomi, Pat Ewing and sons Fred Jim Harvey and daughter Mary Helen, J. D. Atkinson, Hugh Atkinson, Mrs. Fogliasco, Marilyn Fairly, Carolyn Ruth Atkinson, and Dorrance Atkinson. Williams was assisted by Fogliasco and Fairly. Mrs. Atkinson received many gifts.

1st Lt. Tom G. Cox of Separ, a former Bataan survivor, endured three and a half years as a prisoner after two ships he rode were sunk by American bombers. He was recaptured after swimming to shore each time, later imprisoned at Fukuoka No. 1 and Jin sen Korea, liberated in 1945 and returned to the U.S. via Manila.
Joe Salinas Estrada of Lordsburg died after a 500 foot fall at Atwood Mine. Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church with military honors at Shakespeare Cemetery. Surviving are his mother, siblings, and grandparents. Born January 24, 1926 in Hurley New Mexico, he served in the Navy in the Pacific.
Mr and Mrs Tory Lee Jones announce the marriage of their daughter Hannah Sue to William A Kerr on January 7 in Deming New Mexico. The Rev Bryan Hall of the Deming Methodist Church performed the ring ceremony. The couple will reside in Lordsburg.
Mrs E W Richins announces the marriage of daughter Alice to Ivan Ray Kennett son of Mrs Willie B Kennett. The ceremony was performed by Probate Judge Rube Gale at his home Saturday Jan 11. The bride and groom were attended by Mr Craig and Mrs William Craig. Kennett is a Lordsburg High School alumnus recently discharged from the armed forces. Mrs Kennett is a student at Lordsburg High School.
Officers and directors were named Tuesday Jan. 14 by stockholders of the First National Bank. Directors elected were Stanley W. Coon J. A. Foster George P. Jeffus Mrs Mary Dee Kip C. C. Martin Robert C. Martin and C. G. Perry. Officers elected were C. C. G. Martin president C. G. Perry vice president J. A. Fou ter vice president and cashier Miss Gladys Sapp assistant cashier and Miss Roberta McDaniel assistant cashier.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 3 30 p m at Heather Mortuary for Gomecin do Avalos 43 who died Monday after a month long illness The Rev Charlie Fogliasso Church of Christ officiated Burial was in Shakespeare Cemetery with Heather Mortuary in charge Pallbearers included Paul Fierro Ignacio Fierro Leon Simon Avalos Vicente Sias and Arthur Altuna Mr Avalos son of the late Mr and Mrs Jose Avalos He was married to Lenore Fierro of Lordsburg in 1930 and worked in the car department of the Southern Pacific Railroad He belonged to the Mexicana y American Club Surviving are his wife a daughter Rebecca a brother Leon and Simon of Lordsburg five sisters Juanita Avalos Mrs Cruz Padilla Mrs Ralph Estrada of El Paso and Mrs Antonio Diaz of Mexicalie Calif
O. M. Jones announced Yucca Motor Company delivered its first Reo Truck and will have additional units available. Lordsburg Lumber Co. bought the first Reo, while William Lytle has taken an active partner stake in Yucca Motor Company.
The Reconstruction Corporation Lordsburg War Camp in New Mexico sold for 105000 dollars after the Bureau of Land Management price was met. RFC representative Hamond B. Mumford said no other bids were offered and forms for bidding caused delays for local citizens. The camp includes 282 buildings with full utilities and fencing not listed for sale.
Jack Heather left Sunday to visit four Knights of Pythias Lodges in New Mexico where Grand Chancellor Heather will serve as installing officer. He plans to install officers in Alamogordo Albuquerque Roswell and Clovis then return home in a few days.
