Fatal Pedestrian Crash Near La Fiesta Club

Robert Salgado 29 died after being struck by a Morenci driver Antonio Acosta as Salgado and Martha Lopez walked along a highway near the La Fiesta Club. Lopez was only slightly hurt. Inquest deemed the death accidental. a coroner’s jury also investigated another baby’s monoxide gas death. Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters held a joint officer installation at the K of P Hall with a large turnout.

Mavericks Win Two Games Over Weekend

Lordsburg Mavericks opened Friday with a 4 to 33 win over Hatch then beat Hot Springs 39 to 22 on Saturday. Lopez led the Hatch game with ten points while Hernandez topped the Hot Springs clash with ten. Also noted is the Rebekah Assembly installation at K. P. Hall with Mrs. Rose Rosenstein as Grand Installing Officer and officers named for 1942. A February 16 draft registration targets all men 20 to 45 in Lordsburg, born before December 9, 1921, not yet 45.

Lordsburg Assembly No 17 Elects Officers at Open Meeting

Lordsburg Assembly No 17 for Girls held an open voting evening to install officers led by Grand Install officer Opal Wright. Governor appoints local defense council member

Governor John E. Miles writes to Mrs. Ena Walter head of Public Welfare Service appointing her to the Lordsburg local council of National Defense. The council includes Mayor Ernest Short as chairman, Eugene Montague commander of the American Legion, Mrs. Moselle Messecar, and County Commissioner Hyram Pace, with Walter as council member.

Nationwide Daylight Saving Time Starts Monday Morning

At two o'clock Monday February 9 the United States shifts to daylight saving time for the war period. Congress passed the law and the president signed it, requiring everyone to set clocks one hour ahead.

Numerous Lordsburg residents attended the funeral of J W Phillips in Deming last Friday. The 80 year old stockman was a well known pioneer in the stock business drawing stockmen and many citizens to the services.

FSA Collects Large Share of Farm Loans in Region

Hidalgo County official Claude Sanders praised the Farm Security Administration for an six year loan repayment rate of 87 percent. In New Mexico the figure was 38 percent. The FSA funds loans via the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and emphasizes self help through cooperatives and medical care programs benefiting thousands of low income farm families.

Woman's Club Meets Adds New Member and Sews for Red Cross

The Woman's Club met at the club house Monday afternoon. Mrs. Carl Lehman was elected to membership. After business, the group sewed Red Cross garments. A benefit card party is planned for Friday January 20 at the club house.

He plans to show films this week at his home inviting the public. Death of J H Meleod longtime county official

J H Meleod a county commissioner and deacon in Lordsburg Texas died at home on January 20 after a long illness. He served as district commissioner and church leader, left a large family and is mourned by the courthouse and local businesses. Funeral held at Baptist Church with pastor Rev Paul H Elmore officiating.

Attorney Alton B. Warren spoke at the Lordsburg Business and Professional Women's Club luncheon on January 10. He discussed recent labor union trends in employer employee relations. Doctor visits Lordsburg school with sharp praise

Dr. J. W. Diefendorf, longtime contact between the University and the public in New Mexico, paid a personal visit to Lordsburg this week and used strong language to a Liberal representative in praising the school's management. He has enjoyed fourteen years of sunshine there with only one slight illness, earning a reputation as a walking barometer of health.
