Pioneer Peace Officer Laid To Rest In Lordsburg Funeral

Longtime Grant Hidalgo County officer Charles A. Conner died after 26 years in law enforcement. He served as sheriff chief deputy and city marshal. The El Paso police troce offered transfusions after he needed surgery. Survived by wife Mattie Croom and children Charles M. Conner and Mrs. Dabbs. Funeral held at Heather Funeral Home with Knights of Pythias honors.

Ruth Lister Weds Lewis Cable in Tucson Ceremony

Ruth Anna Lister and Lewis F. Cable of San Diego married December 26 at University Methodist Church Tucson with Rev. Williams officiating. Bride wore beige gown with gardenia corsage. father T. R. Lister gave her in marriage. Immediate relatives attended. Afterward the Chase family hosted dinner at the San Carlos Hotel. The couple will reside in San Diego where Cable works for Liggett and Myers Tobacco Co.

Cemetery Association Elects Officers At Annual Meeting

The Cemetery Association held its annual meeting Tuesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Ownby. Elected officers are Mrs. A. V. Broun president, Mrs. Claude Fuller secretary, Mrs. Mathilde Johnson treasurer, with B. Bowen, Mrs. George Trimble, Mrs. John Berry and Mrs. Dora Kerr as committee members. Harold Rolfe learned of his brother C. H. Rolfe’s death in Pomona California on December 31 after months of illness. The Red Cross sewing room will operate Mondays and Thursdays from 1 30 to 6 00 PM. Governor Jatin E. Miles telegraphed Roosevelt pledging New Mexico’s wartime support and noting Guardsmen serving in the Philippines. Christmas cards from the Dunagan family of Blythe California were received in Lordsburg, designed and photographed by Robert Dunagan, showcasing his artistic skill.

Mavericks Scalp Indians In Sun Carnival Parade

The Mavericks and drum majorettes impressed in the Sun Carnival parade led by Prof W C Mearns. Burglary scare at the Augustine residence ended with a kitchen mishap and a cooker misadventure. A basketball game saw the Mavericks defeat the Yaleta Indians 38 to 20, with Deming looming as their next big test.

Edingtons Cousin Trains English Flyers at Phoenix Airport

County Commissioner Ray Edington of Rodeo reveals his cousin Dan Darnell, an aviations instructor, is teaching English trainees at Phoenix airport to fly army planes. Darnell recently flew from Los Angeles to Rodeo to visit his cousin. Edington also notes his wife Agnes Edington, former county superintendent, is principal at a school near Santa Fe.

Spike Sullivan Returns to Progressive Lordsburg

Oldtimers memory frame shows Lordsburg transformed from a wild western town to a modern progressive city. Spike Sullivan, a 40 year employee of the electric light company, visited Tuesday and noted the town’s forward change. Sullivan recently drilled seven wildcat wells in New Mexico, including the Discovery Well in the Hobbs district in 1927.

Rainbow Assembly elects officers at regular meeting

The Rainbow Assembly held its regular meeting Tuesday evening to elect officers. Worthy Advisor Pearl Scott Associate Advisor Barbara Wright Charity Ernestine Bonar Hope Mary Frances Broun Faith Betty Reynolds were chosen. Installation will be held tonight and friends are invited.

Lordsburg Band Shines At Sun Carnival in El Paso

Lordsburg drew praise at the Seventh Annual Sun Carnival with its 12 year trained band led by Professor Mearns. The group wore neat uniforms and majorettes, winning a trophy for appearance while Miss Betty Robinson, the Princess, received strong ovations at multiple events and had her photo printed in major papers. Chamber secretary attended the Rancheros breakfast at sunrise as honor guest with his daughter, escorted by Frank Klohs and Joe Evans.

A man and his young son recovering from measles in Arizona sought help at the Chamber of Commerce. Four visiting capitalists donated cash for lodging and meals, aiding their onward journey. Also reported is the birth of Gordon Willis Jr. in Lordsburg Hospital weighing seven pounds fifteen ounces at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Death of Mrs. Harry Hill in Lordsburg Hospital

Mrs. Harry Hill age 67 widow of the late engineer and mining man died after a brief illness at Lordsburg Hospital. Her son Jesse Hill is traveling from Washington state to arrange funeral services and she is survived by a brother Calon Coleman in Washington state.
