Lordsburg resident Lois Howard berated the city council at the January 14 meeting over a Las Cruces Sun News article. She challenged officials, saying the piece misrepresented local issues and urged accountability from the council.
The Lordsburg Lions Club sponsors the second annual Great Western Gun Show at the National Guard Armory on Saturday 8 AM to 5 PM and Sunday 8 AM to 4 PM. Ed Cramer directs with 100 display tables of guns, knives, ammo, and cowboy gear. Admission 2.50 daily. under 12 free with adult.
The Hidalgo County Commissioners will hold a special session at 5 00 PM Friday in the Commissioner's Room of the Hidalgo County Court House. Topics include a landfill site buy back retirement and a Maternal and Child Health Care Council appointment A public invite was extended State Representative Tom Foy was invited but declined Pansy McDonald commented on his attendance Lordsburg questions were raised by council members and Bill Sprouse discussed Community Action Agency operations A 25 million medical grant for Lordsburg and Deming was reportedly lost last year but could be reapplied Mayor Diaz described local welfare projects and urged cooperation Clark Smith quipped about the meeting as a harsh rebuke

A Meet The Candidates school board forum will be held in Animas School Auditorium Thursday January 28 at 7:00 PM with Catherine Smith as moderator. Candidates Roger Ellis Dennis Massey Kenny Stanford of Animas and Christine Viccelli of Playas will vie for the school board ahead of the February 2 election. Refreshments follow.
Lordsburg animal Control Officer Robert DeLaGarza reports many complaints about loose dogs entering yards. He urges owners to keep dogs under control or face municipal court citations. Seven dogs were adopted in December from the City Dog Pound.
County Manager Tom Anderson and commissioners studied several landfill sites with a consultant from Engineers Incorporated. They gave themselves 15 days to select a site while reviewing a private property option. Valley Mercantile won a fencing bid at the Animas landfill for 2973.18 plus 74.10 cement. Ladd Walker was promoted to road foreman with a 100 per month raise and a 120 day probation. The commission postponed a courthouse park plaque and addressed PERA buyback, race rosters, and hiring for two road positions. Lions Club flags were not displayed due to bad weather and MLK Jr Day.
Hidalgo Democrat Chairman Maura Rico attends President Clinton's inaugural in Washington this week. Invitations listed for Ramona Bassa Bob Kerr Fausto Noce Frank Chaires Rosalina Salinas and Margaret Coogan from Hidalgo County.
The city announces approved funding for airport rehabilitation and urges safe disposal of ashes from wood burning. Do not place ashes in trash containers. a prior incident caused damage to a garbage truck and downtime for community services. Mayor Salvador Diaz Jr notes the risk and invites comments at City Corner.
The Animas School Board renewed George York’s contract as superintendent for the 1993-94 year. A New Mexico native, York previously led Mosquero and has a martial arts background with a third degree black belt. He credits 24 years of disciplined training to administration, stresses student focus, and praises living and working in the district.
