Arch of Dimes Ohio Story on NBC Telecast

NBC plans a Monday January 24 telecast titled Arch of Life for March of Dimes. The program on polio features eight iron lung patients and a newly afflicted doctor coping with his condition. Scenes were filmed at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in California and will air on 61 stations live.

Hospital Receives Incubator From Legion Support

Commander Cassie Martinez and Hidalgo County American Legion Post members helped deliver an E J incubator to the county hospital. The unit features automatic temperature and humidity control plus a nebulizer. Funds were raised since last November and the incubator was presented on January 11 to hospital superintendent Mrs Palmer with Ray Hernandez Harold Bishop and Bob Williams pictured nearby.

Mavericks Break Even in Weekend Basketball Play

The Mavericks lost to Duncan by a tight margin last Thursday and defeated Deming on Saturday. Clark led Duncan with 23 points to Maxwell of the Mavericks 20 as guards traded scores through three quarters. A late bid by Maxwell produced no final points as the game ended with a battle for the lead.

Army Recruiting Station Opens in Silver City New Mexico

The U S Army announces openings in all branches at the Silver City recruiting station to accept qualified applicants. Interested individuals can learn about the GI Bill benefits and must register before January 31 1955 as the termination date for the bill. Weekly interviews occur in Ordsburg at the Selective Service.

Dimes Dances Benefit Planned at Legion and Elks Halls

Two charity dances for the March of Dimes are set at Legion Hall on January 29 with Pug and his band and at Elks Hall on February for the Talavera orchestra. Republic invites attendance to support the cause.

Emergency loans extended for Hidalgo county farmers

The U S Department of Agriculture extends eligibility for emergency loans through December 31 1955 for Hidalgo county farmers. Applications are filed at the Farmers Home Administration office in Saf ford Arizona or via the County Agent at the Lordsburg courthouse. Eligibility requires proof of losses from weather or economic conditions and inability to obtain private financing. County committee determines eligibility. Hidalgo committee includes Frederick P. Jones.

Lordsburg Faculty Challenges Lions Club Tail Twisting

Arvel Goodman of the March of Dimes Athletic Committee issues a challenge to the Lions Club to a basketball game dubbed Les Majesty to the King of Beasts. Tentative date set for Monday night February 31 at 8:00 PM at Central School Gym. Lions promise ribbing but not surrender. More details to come.

Seniors in town to sell crutches for March of Dimes

High school seniors visit town Saturday selling crutches for the Annual March of Dimes Drive. The drive is a special project the seniors are undertaking this year.

Traffic Accident Damages Two Cars

An accident on State Highway 14 nineteen miles west of Lordsburg last Thursday afternoon January 13 left two cars badly damaged. The 1952 Mercury towing a 1952 Ford caused a whip effect when braking. the Mercury jackknifed and overturned while the Ford left the pavement but stayed upright. No injuries were reported.

Local Minister Heads 1955 Heart Fund Campaign

The Rev. B. B. Huckabay named chairman of Lordsburg Heart Fund campaign for February 1955. He aims for a record local contribution to fight heart disease and notes strong results from the American Heart Association education program. Concert by Rubinoff Delights Friday Night Audience

A large audience enjoyed David Rubinoff and his violin Friday night. Rubinoff, famed in the United States and Europe, performed classics like Clair de Lune and Warsaw Concerto along with polonaise tunes. Accompanist Homer Phillips complemented the performance with skilled piano.

Cotton Day To Be Held February 7

New Mexico State College sets February 7 as Cotton Day in Lordsburg Hidalgo County where Extension and SCS specialists will meet farmers to advise on new methods to boost crop quality and production. Ivan Woods, now with Extension in Denver, will speak at the event.

Farm Bureau Week Proclaimed In New Mexico

January 23 to 29 is designated Farm Bureau Week in New Mexico by officers of the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau. Hidalgo County aims to enroll 31 new members to reach a 135 member quota with a kickoff supper January 24 at La Siesta Cafe at 7 09 P M where Bud Lewis will speak.
