Mavericks Cup Third Place In Tournament

Mavericks beat Virden Eagles 49 to 39 to take third in the New Mexico Eastern Invitational Basketball Tournament at Silver City. Maxwell scored 12, Williams 8, Pace 8 as Lordburg led from the start. Cliff loss 56 to 36 earlier boosted Mavericks, Maxwell 18 and Allan 14 led scoring.

A two car collision on highways 70 and 80, east of Lordsburg, killed seven people. Victims include Richard L. Hursh and his wife Setsuko, their two children Linda Ann and Betty Lee, Ralph O. Mitchell, Elbert Vincent, and Mrs. Mitchell. Victims’ residences and duties noted. causes cited as a westbound car at high speed crossing the center line. Bodies prepared at Heather Mortuary and shipped to San Diego, Fairmont, and Ft. Bliss.

State PTA President to Speak at Monday Meeting

Mrs. Elizabeth Margulis, State President of the PTA, will speak Monday evening January 17 at 7:30 in the High School Study Hall. She will discuss PTA sponsored legislation and answer questions. Claudia Staub's class will present a short play Comicopia. Refreshments at 9:00 in the Home Economics Lounge. Police Chief Reports December Patrols and Arrests

Chief of Police Lalo Sanchez reports 3900 miles patrolled in December with 42 arrests and citations. Drunkenness and disorderly conduct led offenses at 18, fines of 5 dollars or 5 days jail offered. An AWOL service member was returned to Ft Bliss Texas. Two suspects held for car theft were released with proof of ownership. One petty theft arrest ended with release upon complaint.

Rubinoff and Violin Concert Tonight in Lordsburg

Sculptures Of Soap On Display At Central School

A traveling soap sculpture exhibit featuring amateur artists from across the United States will be shown at Central High School from January 12 to 20. Open weekdays 9 AM to 5 PM, the display showcases affordable self expression and art education supported by the National Soap Sculpture Committee of New York City.

Cotton Day Set For February At Lordsburg

Lordsburg hosts Cotton Day in early February with Ed Hitson state agent announcing New Mexico State College will bring Ivan Woods a renowned irrigation specialist. Woods will join NM State College experts and Chamber of Commerce sponsors. A committee including Robert Clark Ed Hitson Jack Hazelton Carl Lehman and Leo Cohen was formed to organize the program with date details to be announced.
