Lordsburg Hidalgo County invites nominations for Citizen of the Year. Individuals may write to the Citizen of the Year Committee in care of the Chamber of Commerce by February 15. Clubs and civic groups may submit nominations as well.
State Police officers Jim Sides and Dan Harris, dubbed the Lordsburg division of the National Auto Theft Bureau, recovered five stolen vehicles in two days Jan. 11 and 12. Sides stopped a car on I-10, detaining two Tucson parolees later linked to a hit and run on NM-70. A second Jan. 11 recovery yielded Roger Michael Corley, 18, of Atlanta, in a stolen 1977 Dodge Colt. Corley faces charges in Georgia and a Hidalgo County possession case. A Jan. 11 car abandoned near Separ, a 1975 Saab from Tucson, followed by two Florida-stolen cars found Jan. 12 by Harris at Lordsburg Drug and a local motel, brought eight juveniles into custody at Hidalgo County Jail. All youths were given to juvenile probation officers. The group appeared en route to California with property from thefts across Florida to Lordsburg.
Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce met in Truth or Consequences to hear that the State Park Commission is preparing a feasibility study of land near the Gary Overpass west of Lordsburg for a February Santa Fe presentation. The banquet date options are February 24 or March 3. A.C. oer to guest speak. Gerald White chairs a new welcoming committee with Bill Willis as co chair. The group moved meeting day to the second Thursday and ordered 25 000 brochures from Guynes Printing Co.
Hidalgo County shows high automobile ownership with 2,500 passenger cars registered last year, up 17.9 percent from five years ago. The local density reaches 135 cars per 100 families, far above earlier years, boosting service station receipts to $10,187,000, up from $3,584,000 five years prior.
Alvina B. Aguilera 39 of Lordsburg was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter on Thursday afternoon January 12. She had been charged June 30, 1977, in the shooting death of Mary Flores Clark who was shot once in the head.
A verdict of guilty was returned in the Lordsburg murder case. The victim died at the scene from a small caliber pistol shot. Aguilera faced a murder charge after a July 2 warrant. Bond was set by Magistrate Rosa Lina Salinas and later reduced. District Judge Ray Hughes presided as the jury was seated Tuesday Jan 10. Sentencing slated for Jan 27.
The New Mexico Park Commission unanimously instructed staff to prepare a feasibility study for a state park at the Gary off ramp six miles west of Lordsburg on I 10. The proposal, led by Hidalgo County officials and business leaders, envisions park uses for tourism and local residents with possible wheeled sand sailing areas nearby. If all goes well, plans could progress in 1978.
Hidalgo County Commissioners approved 17 new fair board members for the 1978 Fair. Lordsburg appointees include Johnny Robertson Bill Clark Irene Gomez and Clyde Barringer. Rodeo representation by Rosie Turner Tricia Swift and Edward Elbrock. From Virden Stanley Thygerson Syvan Lunt. Animal reps Tom Jackson Jim Tomerlin Clint Mortensen Lillian Richins. Open House for ESAA Title VII tutoring hosted January 25 at the Enrichment Center. Also notes a separate arrest of Dennis Arnold wanted in Ohio for a parole violation.
