Lordsburg High School announces exams for January 12 and 13. Thursday will cover periods 1, 3, and 5, while Friday covers periods 2, 4, and 6. Afternoons are for teacher work time. Students with three or fewer absences and a C average are excused from finals.
Robert Nelson a 27 year old Albuquerque native has been assigned to Lordsburg replacing Jim Sides who moves to Las Cruces Nelson a 1978 graduate of the New Mexico State Police Academy and his wife Joan now reside at 604 E Second Street with fellow officer Dan Harris Nelson says he and Joan like Lordsburg and expect to enjoy living there.
Dr Jacinto Lopez from New York visited Hidalgo General Hospital in Lordsburg and told Hidalgo County commissioners he plans to relocate, bring another doctor, and practice at Casa de Medicina if licensed in New Mexico. He seeks hospital support for moving costs and clinical staff, noting most needed equipment is ready.
A Hidalgo County health survey shows prescription drug spending at about 28.05 per person annually, with total regional drug costs near 174 000 yearly. National figures echo a similar rise due to inflation and more products, while local plans explore a lease or operating agreement for Hidalgo General with salaries totaling up to 137 600 annually.
C N Morris of Silver City announces candidacy for District Judge Division II in the Sixth Judicial District which includes Grant Luna and Hidalgo counties. A 41 year New Mexico resident and 1952 admitted lawyer, he is a World War II fighter pilot veteran who pledges an honorable independent judiciary and fair impartial service if elected. He and his wife Esther reside on Cottage San Road and she teaches at Stout Intermediate School.
Local businessmen in Lordsburg report steady or slightly higher winter tourism. Motels run 80 to 90 percent full on many evenings while restaurants and fuel outlets see strong demand. new eateries open and traffic on I-10 grows. Chamber programs cited as boosting visibility. optimism for 1978 as a year of growth persists.
Hidalgo Emergency Ambulance report shows 28 emergency runs since the hospital shut, averaging about one a day. Paramedic Don McNutt notes two serious cases, including a Granite Peak accident victim transported to Silver City then Deming and on to El Paso. He says the service will keep operating and has posted the emergency number around town.
