A Friday 7 p.m. basketball clash at LHS Gym features Lordsburg facing Deming in the Law Enforcement Tournament. Local teams meet for early tournament action with both squads aiming for early momentum in the event.
The Lordsburg City Council met January 9 in regular session to open gas and oil bids for city use. E.J. Short accepted for kerosene and single grade oil, Dockum Distributing the low bid for multi grade oil, and B.M. Kimbley the low bid for gasoline and diesel. Hidalgo County Sheriff Billy Darnell updated the council on jail finances and staff, noting the budget is well within the first half and the year end should stay under the Joint Powers total of 242,370.00 as intergovernmental efforts and public awareness campaigns continue countywide.
The Lordsburg Housing Authority met with the City Council on Wednesday January 9 in their regular monthly meeting. Region V representatives Mark Grady and Susie Kimbley discussed vacancy trends at Pyramid Village with nine vacancies and nine applicants to survey. Two more vacancies are expected by mid February as tenant certification continues, with four ready for habitation and five needing renovation. Recertification of all tenants should finish by April as part of the Region V administration takeover. Grady noted single tenants must be elderly or disabled unless HUD approves otherwise. Base rent is 30 percent of income.
The Animas School Board met in regular session January 10 with President Edward Elbrock presiding. Minutes warrants and agenda were accepted as given. For the upcoming school board election position 2 candidates drew straws to determine ballot order, placing Carolyn Swickerath first and Edward Elbrock second.
The Chamber held its regular noon meeting January 10 at Jim's American. Guests were Jacob Martinez and Doris McCarty. Southwest Transit Mix plans phased street work starting January 21 in three town areas with two to three months duration and invites local applicants. Martinez outlined a home shopping promotion with Chamber support but it's his own project. Working committees for Balloon Days, Fair Parade, Moonlight Madness, Merchants Gift Show, and a year-end Chamber Banquet were formed. A January 29 morning meeting with Epstein Enterprises is set to review agency dealings.
Hidalgo County Sheriff Billy Darnell reports a relatively quiet week aside from confiscating about 20 pounds of marijuana. Two Mexican nationals, Jose Luis Prieto Lozano and Garcia Leonel Moling, were arrested near Antelope Wells after a vehicle search prompted by suspicious behavior while attempting to obtain visas. They faced marijuana possession with intent to distribute charges and were bonded at $15,000.
Frank T. Croom 77 died January 12 at his Animas home. Born January 13, 1907 in Pinon New Mexico he moved to the Animas Valley in 1908 from Texas. He married Gladys Clark in Lordsburg in 1932 and ran the Croom Ranch near Animas. Survived by wife three sons Joe Tommy and Johnny all of Animas three grandchildren and two great grandchildren Graveside services January 15 at 11 00 a m at Middle Animas Cemetery with Rev. Floyd Richie officiating pallbearers named LaVerne Isaacks Jack Vaughn Danny Frake Ernie Frake Paul Laux Clayton Yarborough.
Bertha Tarazon Montez 69 died January 14 at home in Lordsburg after a life spanning Apache to Lordsburg. Born April 8 1915 in Apache, she married Vicente Montez in 1932 and was a member of St Josephs Catholic Church. Survived by husband Vicente, two sons and two daughters with many grandchildren, great grandchildren, sisters and brothers. Rosary January 16 and funeral mass January 17 at St Josephs, Shakespeare Cemetery burial. pallbearers listed.
The Lordsburg Lions Club announced winners of their annual Christmas Lighting contest. First place went to Ditters Diaz at 620 E. 7th Street. Second to Paul DanDois at 708 9th Circle. Third to Reyes Aguilera at 412 E. 9th Street.
