Lordsburg School Board weighs recall law and gym bids
The Lordsburg School Board met in regular session on Tuesday January 7. They discussed potential recall legislation to shield boards from polls and confirm support. Bids for the high school gym floor were opened with McClain Company Inc submitting 44965 for installation and Oronco Construction 4977 for removal. A 1966 Ford bus sale was bid up to 1025 by First Baptist Church. A First Grade teacher Margie Devlon resigned citing inability to balance duties with personal standards.

New Hidalgo County Commissioners Meet and Plan Schedule
New Hidalgo County commissioners introduced Jerry Veck Kiki Chaires and Sven Thygerson to the public at an initial meeting held Tuesday January 8. The group established the regular monthly meeting date the second Tuesday at 5 p.m and designated Western Bank as county depository. Existing officials Tommy Anderson Don McNutt and Jake McCarty were approved to continue in their roles. McNutt reported the Hidalgo County Ambulance Service has about 40 000 patient runs since 1975 with 987 calls in 1984 including 120 wrecks 94 heart cases 132 medical emergencies 148 transfers and 50 fires plus 320 courtesy calls made in private vehicles.

Spring Registration Underway At WNMU 1985
WNMU begins spring 1985 registration processing for early scheduled students from January 9 to 11 following alphabetical blocks. Over 1000 students planned to schedule, with new and transfer students meeting January 14 in Light Hall for orientation, advising, and registration in the Physical Education complex. Night scheduling available January 14 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Administration building. Last day to schedule is January 25.

Armed Robbery Report From El Charro Incident In Hidalgo County
Hidalgo County Sheriff Billy Darnell reports an armed robbery at the El Charro Restaurant at 12 04 Friday. A Mexican male 19 22, 5 2 with a small frame demanded cash. he fired, injuring the cashier Isabel Collins as a second suspect possibly traveled in a brown Ford pickup. Officers searched motels and trains. prints and a bullet were recovered. The sheriff notes this is the third armed robbery in eight months and urges caution while detailing a separate Capitan homicide link involving Henry Lee Lucas as alleged. A separate train car wreck injured two local men, Ray Verdugo and Ricky Valencia, with investigation ongoing.

Services Held In Tucson For Netta Farran
Netta L. Farran born March 15 1939 in Douglas died January 3 in Tucson. A Playas resident and Brown and Root employee she helped construct the Playas Smelter as a Control Room Technician. She leaves two daughters Vicky Martin and Cindy Chadburn and two sons Richard Buddy Miller and Perry Miller with four grandchildren Daphne Tempe Courtney Monica. Interment was January 7 at Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson officiated by Brother Ron Cross. Pallbearers were David Arredondo Ronald D. Grainger David E. Hyde Tom L Townsend Charles G. Ragle and Joe Quinn from the Playas Smelter.

Small Aircraft Makes Emergency Landing
State Police Officer Mark Clayton witnessed a small plane execute a forced landing on Wednesday after issuing a meyday that went unheard. The pilot and four passengers from Carlsbad and Austin areas survived with minor injuries. one passenger was five months pregnant. The engine quit and backfired before a smooth landing that left a 140 yard tail trail, with nosecone left wing and wheel damage from a cactus impact. Officer Roxanne McGahey assisted in the investigation.
