The spring semester of adult basic education begins January 14 with any registration from 6 30 to 8 30 p m at Dugan Tarango Middle School. Courses offered include GED and English as a Second Language.
District Court Judge Ray Hughes weighs nine hours of testimony over whether former Lordsburg policeman Ray Patterson deserves eight thousand dollars in back pay after suspension. City lawyer Peter Adang argues no enforceable contract existed and authorizations were unauthorized. Patterson’s lawyer Asa Kelly contends Mayor Koff had authority to set conditions and promised reinstatement with back pay if cleared of bribery charges. Trial features Koff, Diaz supporters, and several city officials as witnesses as evidence unfolds and tape recording failures cause delays.
Lordsburg School System faces escalating vandalism with break ins at the high school on Dec 14 and 27. Principal DeFoor reports stolen items, emptied fire extinguishers, and damage across buildings including libraries, offices, and gym, while Principal Short notes similar break in patterns at elementary campuses See Vandalism Page Two.
Bruce Samuel a 23 year old Lordsburg area man and a 14 year old accomplice were fined 1100 for killing six does in mid November. Investigators said five deer were killed by Samuel and one by the juvenile. The two face up to three years to revoke hunting and fishing privileges. Grant County magistrate John H. Scholl imposed the fines.
Lordsburg resident Roy Patterson filed a back pay breach of contract suit against the city. Rita De La Garza, not suing, was suspended with Patterson. Testimony placed both men in Lordsburg. Mayor Alan Koff said De La Garza works at Southwest Supply, while Patterson is an employee at the Youth Center. Councillor Gilbert Mora was elected to his seat after recently being reported as appointed to a vacancy.
Jerry Taylor of Spearman Texas told Hidalgo County Commissioners he plans to lease Hidalgo General Hospital and reopen the 26 bed facility. He outlined equipment needs and said two doctors would be required, mentioning two New York physicians who might join the project. He emphasized he would work on the Lordsburg project independently.
Hidalgo County Sheriff Eugene Moore announced plans to run for reelection in the June Democratic Primary. He has deep ties to the area since 1939 including service as Lordsburg police officer chief and commissioner and prior private business ventures. Moore notes a record of progress and aims to expand law enforcement services for Hidalgo County and renew the Lordsburg city contract.
