Montoya to chair NM economic development subcommittee

U S Senator Joseph Montoya is named chair of a New Mexico economic development subcommittee in the 91st Congress with influence over federal spending. He urges stronger action by the Four Corners Commission. Several local projects and bids are noted including Lincoln County irrigation funding and state recreation plans at Eagle Nest Lake, amid county reappraisal litigation and highway bids in Luna, Deming, and Chavez counties.

Three Injured In Highway Crash Near Animas Street

A two car collision on Railroad Avenue about 200 yards east of Animas Street Monday near 10 am sent three people to hospital with injuries. Lawrence W. Smith 59 of McPherson Kan drove the Smith car. Zolton Tisza 30 of Trenton N J drove the other car. Marie C Keppler 20 of Trenton a passenger in Tisza car also injured. Tisza jailed on DUI charge. Smith cited for failure to use due care.

Lordsburg JV Dominates Animas In 77–47 Victory

Lordsburg High School JV overcame a slow start to slam Animas JV 77 to 47. Ernie Sanchez led with 15 points, followed by Gandara with 13 and Bejarano Hernandez with 10. Lordsburg pressed hard, turning steals into fast-break points and pulling away after halftime.

City Council Acts On Nursing Home and Housing Plan

The council unanimously approved extending paving, sewer and utilities to Retirement Ranches nursing home project after discussions with Mayor Koff and Retirement Ranches representatives. Construction targeted around March 15 pending written city assurance of services. The body also passed a HUD housing contract authorizing about 83 000 in federal rent subsidies to support 100 low income units, with City as agent. Mayor Koff noted ongoing funding challenges and pending highway earthworks offer for lake sites.

Lordsburg School Board Ballot Positions Drawn

Ballot positions were drawn for the Lordsburg Municipal School Board election to be held Tuesday February 4. Position one has Ralph Burton as the sole candidate for a two year term. Positions two and three list multiple candidates for six year terms. Polling places are Central School Gym Precinct 1-A City Hall for 1-B and 1-C Virden school building for Virden precinct.

Senate Panel to Probe Federal Grazing Fee Hike

U S Senator Montoya reports assurances from Senator Jackson that the Interior and Insular Affairs panel will thoroughly examine the proposed rise in grazing fees on federal lands. The Subcommittee on Public Lands will hold hearings once dates are set, with Montoya pledging to present rancher concerns.

Sheriff Receives EF B 1 Commendation for Federal Case

Sheriff Leroy McCarty was commended by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in a letter to the Hidalgo County Board of Commissioners. The note credits his arrest and investigation for federal prosecution of William Henry McLarty Jr and his return to prison for a prior federal violation. The letter praises his cooperation and referral of the case. The sheriff noted the prisoner was moved to Luna County jail since Hidalgo County jail lacks federal approval.

Dog Leash Law Again Put Into Effect

William E. Collins city animal control officer announced the leash law is in effect due to recent complaints. Dogs found loose will be impounded for three days with owners paying a pound fee of one dollar per day and showing proof of rabies shots.

District Attorney E C Serna filed quo warranto in district court against Edward M Campbell alleging unlawful hold of Lordsburg municipal judge office under ordinance 222. The action cites usurpation since October 16 1968 with C L Brown as duly elected judge since 1966. hearing set for February 20 at 10 am.

Lordsburg Dogies sweep St. Marys and Stout in junior high basketball

The Lordsburg Junior High Dogies defeated St. Marys Knights 82 13 in the 8th grade and 72 13 in the 7th grade on Friday January 10. They then beat the Stout Broncos 45 29 in the 8th grade and 42 12 in the 7th grade on Saturday January 11.
