The Rev. Franklin R. Poage presides at 10 a.m. church school and 11 a.m. morning worship with no evening services.
The Liberal reports daily high and low temperatures from Lordsburg based on a government thermometer at 4250 feet. Readings show January 2 to 9 with highs from 24 to 46 and lows from 11 to 29, including 32 on Sunday January 5.

Mrs Mary Eddy resigned from her post as cashier at the Community Public Service Company after a year and a half of service. Don Johnson Lordsburg manager announced that a successor has not yet been chosen. Eddy is the former Mary McDaniel, daughter of Arch and Mrs McDaniel of Red Rock.
Harold E Scofield and Eugene Romney were named on a committee to contact interested parties at Virden with the aim of organizing a Lions Club there. The announcement came from Lions President C B Austin at a noon luncheon at the Woman's Club Building. Dr J H Baxter reported on a successful March of Dimes basketball game and announced another game. Two new members, C M Steele and Henry Ellison, were received by the club.
Lawrence Gay starts Gay's Sales and Service on West Railroad Avenue offering Philco Maytag Chambers Ranges Servel Mission heaters and Juezzi water systems for home irrigation and plant use. He previously ran Lordsburg Lumber and Building Supply, now operated by H O Johnson who also runs Bowie Lumber and has 14 years in building supply. Johnson will stock building supplies and plumbing items.
Jack Morgan and Earle Kerr form the Kerr-Morgan Agency to take over the Reynolds tax service and insurance business. They also start Arrow Finance Co. Morgan served as out of state auditor for New Mexico school tax division, Kerr as director of the same division.
A psychologist suggests insomnia may be an idea imprisoned in the mind attempting to enter consciousness. The piece hints that late snacks like pickles and ice cream could delay sleep.
District Judge A. W. Marshall of Deming traveled to Lordsburg on official business Thursday, meeting with local officials and reviewing case files.
Mrs. Howard Phillips, chair man of the USO drive here, praises Lordsburg citizens for their cooperation in the recent drive. Contributions come from Courthouse, Womans Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Knights of Pythians, Masonic Lodge, Pythian Sisters, local stores, hotels, restaurants, and individual supporters including John H. Kirby, Lehman’s Store, Ritter Walker Co, and many others.
United States Steel's Theatre Guild on the Air airs Sundays at 8 p m on four New Mexico ABC stations KTRC Santa Fe KFUN Las Vegas KGAK Gallup KOAT Albuquerque. The January 5 program co starred Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne in The Great Adventure and officially opened the new station.
Supporters plan two charity balls in Lordsburg at the Railroad Club and La Fiesta Club to raise funds for polio research and treatment. The event aligns with nationwide efforts February dances and the March of Dimes legacy started with Franklin D Roosevelt who faced polio at Warm Springs Georgia. Last year’s polio outbreak was the worst since 1916, affecting thousands of homes, as donors are urged to contribute.
The Knights of Pythias and the Pythian Sisters held a joint officer installation at the KP Hall Tuesday night. Readily named officers include Mrs. Jack Heather as most excellent chief and George Haltom as chancellor commander with a list of other officers across both orders.
Mrs Josephine Gray has resigned her clerk position after 11 years service at the post office. Postmaster Gene Montague announced she joined the staff in April 1935. Her husband Louie Gray works for Southern Pacific between Lordsburg and El Paso as brakeman and extra conductor. Bobby Williams, son of Mr and Mrs C M Williams of Lordsburg, has joined the post office and was previously a sub clerk at Silver City.
The W. S. C. S. of the Methodist Church installed officers for the new year at the home of Mrs. John Bradford. Officers include Mrs. Isaac Van Meter as president and Mrs. Donald Johnson as vice president, with others named to treasurer study course and devotions. A secretary will be named later. The finance committee features Mrs. Jeffus Mrs. Baxter Mrs. Messecar and Mrs. Richard B. Rice.
Chuck Taylor, renowned basketball authority, will hold a free clinic at 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the High School. The event will describe demonstrate and picture modern basketball technique before coaches and players from the area. Taylor, a veteran of the Navy and Army Air Forces, coached the Wright Field Kittyhawks and has run clinics since 1923 with broad influence.

Fire Chief J H Baxter urges steps to reduce winter fires. Check portable kerosene heaters for dirt and ventilation, have furnaces inspected, remove soot, replace damaged chimney parts, ensure 18 inch clearances, avoid overheating, bank fires carefully, and dispose of hot ashes only in metal containers.
The Yucca Motor Company on East Railroad Avenue has been named the authorized Reo Trucks dealer for Lordsburg. O. M. Jones, owner, announced after receiving a 1947 Reo Truck this week. The firm opened last Oct 1 after purchasing the property in April and now offers 76 gasoline and oils.
The Lordsburg Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star held a joint installation at the Masonic Temple on December 27. Peter M. Chase served as installing officer and Sam H. Gass as marshal, with numerous officers installed for both organizations including Tom J. Mayfield as worshipful master and Mrs. Willis Lacy as worthy matron.
The community held multiple Christmas dinners hosted by Wrights, Andersons, Conners, and McHalffeys with relatives, friends, and guests from Silver City and Lordsburg. A Watch Night party hosted by Mrs. Elma K. Wright featured games, refreshments, and a New Year’s toast, then groups including Grant Harper and Sunnie Harper rang in 1947 with Auld Lang Syne.
John R. Bradford of the New Mexico State Police announced that brake and light tests were due by January 1. Tests are required three times yearly and may be conducted at Hidalgo Garage, Motor Sales Co., Rich's Motor Co., or Prine Motor Co.
The town records a record low eight degrees on January 5 amid one of Lordsburg's coldest periods. Traffic accidents were frequent but minor, schedules stayed largely intact with some Texas delays, and livestock weathered the cold though cattle were pulled down slightly. Ice remained on structures and Pyramid Peak stayed icy, while sun provided brief relief and ranchers assessed moisture.

Rev. David E. Moore presides over Sunday School at 9 45 a m with Joe Rouse as superintendent. Morning worship at 11 includes The Lord's Supper. Training Union is at 6 30 p m followed by Evening worship at 7 30 p m on the theme Three Sides of Jesus. W M S meets Wednesday at 2 30 p m and a Prayer service is at 7 30 p m. All are urged to attend.
W. H. Walter of Animas was elected chairman of Hidalgo County Commissioners Court at the initial regular session. Other commissioners attending were Hyrum Pace of Virden and Lee Smith of Lordsburg. Mrs. Rachel Atkinson serves as county clerk and board clerk.
Films from the Sacramento Assembly in the mountains will be shown at 7 30 p m January 16 at the Methodist Church announced by the Rev Franklin R Past or The Lordsburg team will bring and present the reels with Rev Bryan Hall aiding in the display The assembly invites the public to view the film in the Ruidoso area New Mexico
Mrs. Frank Bowman hosted a birthday dinner for her husband on Sunday. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Bowman Grant Bowman Mrs. Moselle Messecar Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Everett and the hosts.
Gordon Willis was surprised on his birthday January 3 with a chow mein dinner hosted by his wife. Attending guests included Mr. and Mrs. J. Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Benson, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bowman, Gerald Hunt, and Jack Willis.
Funeral services were held Wednesday in Douglas Arizona for Robert L. Payne 63 who suffocated Sunday night at Floyd Kimbell Ranch near Douglas Burial was in Calvary Cemetery Payne born October 7 1882 He is survived by four sisters and two brothers including Mrs W E Dunagan of Lordsburg and several nieces and nephews
FE L Preis watch inspector for the Southern Pacific Railroad has moved his shop to the Dorsett Boot Shop on South Pyramid Street seeking improved service and inviting former customers to visit the new location.
E. W. Richins registers a 1946 Ford for der. E. J. Short registers a 1946 De Soto. Muir Ranch lists a 1946 Lincoln. Mrs. Bessie Adams of Animas registers a 1946 Chevrolet sedan.
