New Mexico Farm Bureau kicks off its 1960 membership drive led by executives from Searcy Arkansas and Leonard John Western of the American Farm Bureau Federation. Governor Burroughs proclaims Farm Bureau Week January 10 17 as leaders warn against welfare state expansion and federal aid tying farmers to non productive services.
Hidalgo County Democratic primary on May 10 will decide most county posts with incumbents seeking re election. County clerk and treasurer are ineligible to succeed themselves, while Emma Scofield and Margaret Ann Philips seek clerk and treasurer roles respectively. Several officials, including Kerr Pace Brown Mot ley, run for re election and Percy Brown’s widow stands for assessor. Jack Morgan and R H Womelman also announce re election bids.
Jose Barcenas, co chair of the Lordsburg Lions Club campaign, displayed a glass mirror jewel box he crafted for the New March of Dimes drive. He will make ten boxes funded by W F Ritter Lumber Co with his labor. The club plans to pass them to other groups to raffle or auction for proceeds to the campaign.
Gary Sandlin age 20 was sentenced in District Court Friday to one year in the Hidalgo County jail with three months to serve and probation for unlawful use of marijuana. Judge H Vearle Payne suspended all but three months and dismissed one similar charge. Court costs of 150 dollars were assessed.
W. M. Morrison of Lordsburg has been named president of the First National Bank, succeeding C. C. Martin who has been hospitalized. Morrison’s career spans Vernon Texas, Jourdanton Texas, Pecos Texas and Lordsburg, where he served as executive vice president before the promotion. He holds leadership roles with the District Bankers Group No. 1, the New Mexico Bankers Association agricultural committee, and the Lordsburg Lions Club. The Jan. 12 stockholders meeting named directors Mary Dee Kipp, Robert Martin, Parley P. Jones, Darrow F. E. Richins and N. M. Morrison, with C. C. Martin and C. G. Perry retained as advisory directors. Officers named include Robert C. Martin as chairman, Darren E. Richins as vice president, Fred Ewing as assistant vice president, Gladys Sapp as cashier, and Virginia Dunkerson and Hazel Amis as assistant cashiers.
Hidalgo County reports 117 births and one stillborn in 1959 while deaths totaled 41. Statistics were provided by Mrs Ione Martin head of the Vital Statistics division at the Health Department.
An informal special meeting of the Board of Aldermen at City Hall discussed a budget and heard a Mev Co survey on city operations. Mayor Koff noted confusion over state finance figures and fire fund reporting while Norris of the May Co proposed a $4,000 plan to boost efficiency through policy setting and staffing reviews.
Jesus C. Flores Jr aged 24 of Lordsburg was arrested at a Texaco park east of Lordsburg and charged with possession of marijuana. He pleaded guilty and was bound over for district court sentencing. Police and state officers reported a total of 14 arrests in six months, including five juveniles, in the drug crackdown.
W C Robinson one of 20 traveling science teachers will spend a week at Lordsburg High School starting January 18 as part of an eight state program. The NSF grant of 335000 funds the Oklahoma State University consortium and Robinson prepared at OSU with lecture equipment and a station wagon. He holds a BS from Wisconsin State College and MS from the University of Michigan.
The National Foundation reports polio cases up 83 percent from 1958 with 5,694 paralytic cases in 1959, up from 3,122 the prior year. Dr William Clark of the foundation warns of ongoing cripplers like arthritis and rheumatic diseases, urging support for the March of Dimes in Lordsburg led by John Anderson.
The Lordsburg Assembly No. 17 of the Order of Rainbow Girls will install its worthy advisor, Mary Edith Hart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Cureton, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday January 17 in the Masonic Hall. Public is invited.
A Western Electric crew began installing equipment in the Mountain States Tel & Tel building for the dial system. When cut in, towns including Bayard Glenwood Lordsburg Santa Rita Cliff Deming Hurley Reserve and Silver City will be served from a central operator office in Deming. The system will remove letter prefixes from phone numbers and use only numbers.
