Monthly Luncheon for Officers' Wives Held at Club

Officers' Club hosted the officers' wives for their monthly luncheon on Friday. Mrs A J Tarren presided as hostess with co hostess Mrs C E Jack assisting as hyacinth centerpiece decor described. Guests enjoyed shrimp cocktail, oyster stew, pineapple, cottage cheese, fried potatoes, tenderloin of trout, tarter sauce, creamed celery peas and coffee.

The Army team edged Lordsburg High 26-25 at regulation and won 29-25 in a five minute overtime. Pvt B Eaton scored the final points as new members Coffman Flournoy Jolly joined the squad under coach Reed and Captain White.

Rainbow Installation Of Officers At Masonic Hall

The Rainbow Assembly held an open installation of officers Monday evening at the Masonic Hall. Mrs. Ella Brown served as Mother Advisor in Mrs. Viola Lacy’s absence. New officers include Miss Mary Frances Broun as Worthy Advisor and Miss Betty Reynolds as Associate Advisor.

Old Colored Man Barney Wilson Dies at 62

Barney Wilson, a familiar town figure described as a kind old colored man, died January 11 and was buried January 13. Services were held at Heather Chapel with Rev. F R Poage officiating. funeral director Jack Heather oversaw arrangements. He was 62.

Lordsburg Army Team Schedule at Recreation Hall

After the game a dance will be held in the hall. A large crowd is expected to attend to support the team. On January 23 the Lordsburg army team will play a return game with the Deming Airbase team at the gymnasium. On January 30 the Lordsburg army team will play a return game with the Thatcher team in the Lordsburg Internment Camp Recreation Hall.

Prugles Host Dinner With Texas Ham Gift

Mr and Mrs R B Prugle entertained guests Saturday night at their home. The highlight was a baked ham sent from Mrs Prugle’s father's Texas farm. The meal included pear and cheese salad cauliflower new potatoes peas olives celery raspberry souffle and coffee. Guests included Major and Mrs W P Churchill and Mayor and Mrs E J Short.

Private Samons Announces January 5 Marriage

Pvt. Haskell C. Samons of Shamrock Texas returns home Sunday to announce his marriage to Ruby Clay on January 5. Mrs Samons was before marriage named Ruby Clay. The couple’s romance remains largely private but Samons is very happy.

Presidential Birthday Ball Set for January 30 in Hidalgo County

Albuquerque Mayor Clyde Tingley chairs the state committee for the Ninth Annual Presidential Birthday Ball with Postmaster Bugne Montague as Hidalgo county chair. The event at La Fiesta, two weeks from Saturday, supports the March of Dimes to fight infantile paralysis, with multiple committees and a goal of raising funds through dances, basketball games, and coin boxes distributed publicly.

Representative Payne Is Named Floor Leader Again

The 16th state legislature organized with Rep. M. R. Smith of Clovis named house leader. H. Vearle Payne of Lordsburg became majority floor leader. Gilberto Lopez of Gallup was chief clerk. Rep. Annual Bank Meeting Elects Directors and Officers

The First National Bank stockholders met to re elect officers and directors. John T. Muir is re elected president with C G Perry as vice president and E M Brickley as executive vice president and managing director. Cashier Gladys Sapp and other officers were re elected.

Visits in Lordsburg from El Paso and Bisbee

Mrs. Elsie Kipp of El Paso and her daughter Mrs. Freddie Ward visited Rex Kipp and John T. Muir families in Lordsburg after traveling from Bisbee. Capt. Ward was last in Des Moines and then Denver. Mrs. Ward rented an apartment in Denver and improvised kitchen needs with metal utensils bought in Lordsburg.

Winter Snow Rides Leave Riders Banded by Accident

Jackie Hall, son of Mr and Mrs Dee Hall, wears a plaster cast after a non dangerous fracture to the lower right leg from a snow sleigh crash at Gold Hill. Dickie Fedrick and Cal Hill were uninjured. Lordsburg Hospital says cast removal time aligns with usual healing. Snow remains on mountain tops.

USO Committee Sets January 20 Officers Election

The USO Committee met at the club room with Adjutant Glaeser and planned the regular annual meeting. Officers will be elected on Wednesday January 20 at 7 p m, with a large turnout expected from the committee.

Red Cross sewing room seeks help for kit bags

The Red Crown sewing room at the Woman's Club opens Thursday at 2 p m to assemble kit bags for Red Cross. Donations asked for contents worth 1.15 each and knitted garments. volunteers urged to bring thimbles and scissors. Mrs Donld Johnson and Mrs L B Robinson lead.

Woman’s Club hosts social with prizes for winners

A Monday afternoon gathering at the Woman’s Club saw fifty seven members attend. Refreshments were served and prizes donated by local businesses. First prize went to Mrs. R. E. Bureng, second to Mrs. Ben Cochran, and others recognizing Pokeno and bridge wins by several members, including Mrs. Alton Warren and Mrs. J. H. Baxter.

Railroad Accident Leaves Teenager With Severe Injury

Balconero Garcia, 19, riding a freight car in the east yards Sunday night was thrown onto the track. His left leg was nearly severed but he was promptly taken to DeMons Hospital where doctors report he is doing nicely. He had left LHS a month earlier to work for the McNutt Oil Company.

Couple returns from California visit and eye treatment plans

Mrs. and Mrs. B. B. Ownby returned last Friday from a three weeks trip to Glendale California to visit Mrs. Ownbys niece Mrs. Clara Roberts. They stopped in Phoenix to consult a specialist about Mrs. Ownbys eye condition and possible cataracts while hoping for treatment to avert loss of sight.

Doctor Conder Leaves Lordsburg for El Paso

Dr. H. H. Conder, after about two weeks at Lordsburg Hospital, departed on Wednesday to travel to El Paso to consult a medical specialist.

Joint Installation of K of P and Pythian Lodge Officers

Knights and Ladies filled the K of P Hall for joint installations. Pythian Sisters welcomed Grand Officers and installed many officers led by Mrs Leon Brock. Pyramid Lodge No 23 officers were installed by G Haas of Deming. Several members and guests spoke, a lantern was lit, and a Damon and Pythias lecture followed with tributes to two members joining the army.

USO Dance Well Attended

The USO dance Wednesday evening drew a large crowd. A six piece orchestra from the Internment Camp provided music and coffee and cookies were served.

Two Royal Air Force servicemen visiting from London spoke to the county War Board and spectators at the courthouse and a ranch visit. They urged increased food production for Allied nations, noting ration constraints and the need to feed troops and civilians as the war continues.

Seven Lordsburg boys reported to the Reception Center in Pt Bliss on Wednesday. Red Cross Window Shows the Ingenuity of Women

Wednesday afternoon Mrs Fanny Poindexter Red Cross chief and Mrs Norma Robinson arranged an attractive display window at the Community Public Service office. The exhibit features a complete soldier’s kit and aims to send 400 such kits to the boys at the front, with about 250 already prepared. Stop by the post office to view the display.
