He praised democracy as effective, noted slow action can prevent rash moves, and spoke of potential conservative shifts in future elections. He urged active committee work to make a voice heard while criticizing deficits and inflation.

Stolen Car Report Triggers Chain Of Events In New Mexico

State Police Officer Jim Sides explains a 29 December incident starting with a stolen car report from the Port of Entry on I-10. Gary Diltz of Spring Texas claimed a pistol was hidden in the car and described hitch hikers, leading to arrests in Arizona and a Houston theft inquiry. Las Cruces police confirmed a University Ford theft, and Diltz faces Texas aggravated assault charges while in Hidalgo County Jail awaiting paperwork. The case spans Las Cruces, Lordsburg and Wilcox with Arizona warrants and two stolen cars involved. The Lordsburg School Board meets January 9 at 7 PM.

Lordsburg Sets Municipal Election Day And Roster

Lordsburg City Council at the January meeting approved a city ordinance naming Tuesday March 7 1978 as Municipal Election Day. Voters will elect a mayor for four years, councilmen for wards one two three four, a two year term for ward three, and a municipal judge for four years. The voter signup book closes 5 p.m. January 24 by the county clerk.

Hughes Seeks Second Term as District Judge in Democratic Primary

Ray Hughes announced his candidacy for re election to District Judge Division II in the Democratic Primary on June 6. He was elected in 1976 and has served since January 1977, completing relevant judicial training and a juvenile justice seminar this year. He is married to Lillian N. Hughes with five children and invites input on the New Mexico Children s Code study. Declarations must be filed by January 31.

Rescuer Falls In Mine Shaft To Save Dog

Anthony Quetel Jr. of Playas crawled 44 feet into a mine shaft south of Lordsburg to rescue a dog. He and the dog were saved by Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputies New Mexico State Police Lordsburg police and Hidalgo Emergency Ambulance Service after Quetel slipped during ascent. Both Quetel and the dog recovered. one paramedic later assisted.
