Elmer Jeanes Named to National Committee

Elmer Jeanes of Rob ert Swan Post No 30 is appointed as a general member of the National Membership and Activities Committee. The honor, recommended by New Mexico officers, recognizes years of service to the post and department. A recognition letter came from National Commander Charles L Bacon of the American Legion.

Method Of Determining Cotton Acreage Changed

Hidalgo ASC County office announces a 1962 change in cotton acreage calculation. Acreage will be the land devoted to cotton with no fallow or intertilled planting deductions, subject to a 60 inch maximum row width and a minimum deductible area of .03 acre. Deduction rules apply for skip row patterns and noncotton interrow widths.

Western Gas Buys Rodeo Animas Gas System

Western Gas Service Company signed a December 14 contract to purchase Ray Edington's natural gas distribution systems in Rodeo and Animas. Executive VP D L Hill Jr said full acquisition and operation transfer with Western personnel should occur within 30 days.

City to Call Bids on Buildings and Insurance

The city council voted to call for bids on purchasing buildings including a new fire station at Railway Blvd and Main St. A public warehouse and office would be on the city lot between the fire station and Wabash St. A water tank at the pumphouse will replace two existing tanks. Elks Lodge members plan an old fashioned box supper at the Elks Club on January 27 for members and accompanied guests. No minors without parents. Auction starts 7:30 followed by a dance. Admission: ladies bring a box or $3 per couple.

Hidalgo County Sheriff's Posse held its annual 1962 election on January 8 with Gene Hines as captain and officers including Dick Hamilton Garland Johnson Leroy Mc Carty Ike Kennett and Gerald Pace. A social potluck followed the Lordsburg Animal game on January 13 in the Fair Building with music and dancing for all members and friends.

4-H County Award Night Details for January 15

The County 4 H Council met at the courthouse to finalize plans for the County Awards Program on Monday night January 15 at the New Elks Lodge Hall east of Lordsburg. The event runs 7:00 to 9:30 PM with slides and talk by Farrel Lines IFFIR delegate from New Mexico about six months in Turkey. Linda Payne reports on her Chicago trip after winning a state General Home Economics award. Ed H Hitson and Mrs Eva M Thomas will present year pins and special awards. Junior Leaders will present awards to organizations for outstanding 4 H support. Invitations are extended to all. punch coffee and cup cakes will be served.
