Desperado W. C. Cook Targeted by Midnight Road Block

FBI directed road block north of Lordsburg since midnight Saturday January 6 to capture W. C. Cook the Oklahoma killer moving toward Albuquerque and California. Cook from Joplin Missouri has slain eight people, leaving a bloody trail across Oklahoma and Mexico with hard luck tattooed on his knuckles. Lawmen including FBI agents Kissiah Warren Davidson Riggs Taylor Wiehe Wolstenholme and local officers oversee the pursuit.

Worthy Advisor Installs for Rainbow Girls in Open House

Margaret Richards, daughter of Mr and Mrs A A Richards, was installed as Worthy Advisor of the Rainbow Girls during an open house installation in the Masonic building on Tuesday evening January 2. Bouquets adorned the ceremony with Miss Richards selecting the rose as her flower color red and the music note as her symbol. Installing officers included Anna Martin as Worthy Advisor recorder Mrs Ben Cochran musician Clara Elizabeth Foster chaplain Mrs Harry S Chase and marshal Barbara Parker.

P. T. A. Opens Thrift Shop to Aid Schools

The P. T. A. will open a thrift shop in the old Chamber of Commerce office next week. It will accept household goods clothing toys and furniture on consignment or as donations. Hours are Mondays Thursdays and Saturdays 9 to 11 a m and 1 to 4 p m. Profits fund P. T. A. school and community projects.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at Lordsburg High

Three showings of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are set for January 17 at the Lordsburg High School auditorium. Times are 10:00 A M for elementary, 1:30 P M for high school, and 7:30 P M for adults. Sponsored by the Lordsburg Parent Teachers Association the company features a group of real dwarfs noted for comedy acrobatics and stage presence.

Lordsburg high school band receives five new instruments from the Col John T. Muir Trust Fund including a William S Haynes D Flat piccolo in sterling silver. The set features two silver plated with gold bells King altions and supports spring concerts and next fall’s football games.

Car License Plates Now On Sale In County Treasurer Office

1951 passenger car plates are on sale in the County Treasurer's office. Damon Dunagan asks those who requested the same license number between 1 and 100 to call this week. Truck plates have not arrived and are not expected until about January 25. March 2 is the deadline to purchase New Mexico plates.

Second Annual New Mexico Western Basketball Tourney Opens

The Second Annual New Mexico Western basketball tournament will be held in Silver City January 12 and 13. Teams Cliff Cowboys Deming Wildcats Hurley Indians Lordsburg Mavericks Virden Eagles and Western Colts compete with Western and Deming on byes. Opening games Friday at 7 pm Hurley vs Lordsburg and Cliff vs Virden. Semifinals Saturday at 1 30 pm Lordsburg or Hurley to face Western and 2 45 pm Cliff or Virden against Deming. Consolation at 7 pm and 8 15 pm with 3rd place. Championship at 9 30 pm Saturday with final winner earning first place.

First Baptist Church Hosts Candidate Pastor Rev John Dodd Meet

About 65 members attended an all day meeting and covered dish dinner at First Baptist Church last Sunday to become acquainted with Rev John Dodd a pastorate candidate. A supply minister will fill the pulpit in the coming Sundays.

The Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce reports 1950 activities and a $6,081.90 year total with $4,500.15 receipts and $5,208.32 disbursements. Highlights include backing New Mexico Development Commission, sending a Sun Princess to El Paso carnival, distributing 2000 folders, fielding over 1000 inquiries, assisting Municipal Airport improvements, supporting Crusade for Freedom, and a Christmas lighting drive with $25 prize funds involving local residents. 65 active members.
